Coventry City earned a hard-fought point from their seventh Championship draw in a highly competitive match with mid-table Huddersfield Town.

Town should have been two goals up inside the first 20 minutes when Isaac Mbenza was first denied by a brilliant save before rounding the keeper and hitting the side netting in a poor miss from the visiting forward.

The Sky Blues were far livelier in the second half when Fankaty Dabo and Max Biamou combined, only to be denied by the post as both sides attempted to go for the full three points.

It was a scrappy start to the game with both sides unable to retain possession for long enough to create any meaningful attacks, City’s first attempt on goal coming when Gus Hamer collected the ball in the final third and cut inside to open up space for himself and let fly with a 25-yard shot that rose over the bar.

The game suddenly opened up around the 15 minute mark when Town dispossessed the Sky Blues and fed Mbenza in the box, the forward looking favourite to score but denied by a terrific save from Ben Wilson who threw himself to his left to push the ball out for a corner.

City defended that and set off on a blistering counter attack which ended with Callum O’Hare slipping Hamer through, only for the midfielder to shoot inches over the bar.

The ball was back at the other end a minute later when two Town forwards got in behind, with Mbenza going round the keeper but sending his shot into the side netting when it looked certain he’d score.

The visitors began to find their rhythm, enjoying 61 per cent of the first half possession and forcing Coventry into a game of containment and trying to catch them on the counter attack.

But Mark Robins’s men grew in confidence as the first half went on, with Jamie Allen testing the keeper just before the break with a hard and low shot on goal.

The home side continued to grow and push at the start of the second half when they enjoyed a number of free-kicks sent into the opposition box as Huddersfield began to rack up their foul count, with the referee having a word with full-back Harry Toffolo.

Striker Max Biamou was sent on just after the hour in a straight swap for lone front man Tyler Walker, who had not had a sniff of goal, as City continued to look to be in the ascendancy until midway through the half when the Terriers got a second wind in a wide open game that could have gone either way.

Both sides were trying to win it with Fankaty Dabo cutting in past Toffolo and sending in a low shot that Biamou looked to get a touch to, only for it to bounce off the inside of the far post.

Substitute Alex Pritchard was then denied at the other end by Wilson who dived to push away the striker’s effort from outside the box.

But the game ended all square as City extended their impressive unbeaten run to eight games.
