Max Biamou secured a valuable and deserved point for Coventry City against the Championship leaders at Carrow Road.

The Sky Blues fell behind to a controversial first half penalty against a Norwich City side who looked there for the taking.

Mark Robins's men battled back, dominated the second half and finally got their rewards in the 89th minute when fifth City substitute Biamou turned in from close range.

City made a positive start to the game against the league leaders who were forced to field a makeshift side due to 12 seniors players being out either injured or suspended.

But as you’d expect with any Norwich side, they kept the ball well and knocked it about nicely in the first half when they enjoyed 61 per cent of the possession.

Coventry’s best attack and first chance of the game came on 14 minutes when Ryan Giles drove forward down the left and sent in a decent cross which Callum O’Hare headed well wide of the target.

Fankaty Dabo then created another opportunity five minutes later when he pulled the ball back from the byline for Jamie Allen who sent a stooping header disappointingly over the bar.

Ben Wilson, making his full league debut in place of the injured Marko Marosi, then pulled off three impressive saves in quick succession to deny first Marco Stiepermann and then two from Prezemyslaw Placheta after the home side piled on the pressure, getting in behind far too easily.

But the keeper conceded a penalty on 25 minutes when he raced out to stop Placheta, throwing himself at the ball but catching the forward’s feet in the process.

Coventry players protested at what looked like a harsh decision but the referee pointed to the spot and Mario Vrancic slotted home down the middle to give Norwich the lead.

The visitors finished the half strongly and continued that momentum in the second period when Amadou Bakayoko headed narrowly over from a Giles’ centre.

Robins made three changes just after the hour mark, sending on Tyler Walker, Gus Hamer and Jordan Shipley for Bakayoko, Allen and Sheaf as he looked to get something out of the game.

And they went close pulling level minutes later when Giles pulled the ball back for O’Hare who was denied by Michael McGovern at his near post – the keeper’s first save of the afternoon.

Max Biamou and Wes Jobello added further attacking options when they went on for Liam Kelly and Dabo for the last 14 minutes when Dom Hyam headed wide from a late corner when he should really have hit the target.

Kyle McFadzean was then denied by the keeper from a Hamer free-kick as City kept pushing but couldn’t quite find a way through.

But Biamou was in the right place at the right time at the death to secure the point.

Late Coventry goal pegs back Norwich

Maxime Biamou's last-minute equaliser saw Coventry come away from injury-ravaged Championship leaders Norwich City with a valuable point.

Mario Vrancic's penalty put the Canaries ahead after Coventry keeper Ben Wilson was adjudged to have brought down Przemyslaw Placheta.

Coventry hit the post with seven minutes left as Kyle McFadzean's header from Gustavo Hamer's ball beat home keeper Michael McGovern.

But they got a deserved equaliser at the death as Biamou fired in from a yard out after Ryan Giles' ball into the six-yard box.

The point sees Norwich's unbeaten run stretch to 10 games, but their lead at the top of the table remains a single point after Bournemouth were held at Rotherham, while the Sky Blues move up a place to 20th in the Championship and three points clear of the relegation places.

With 13 players out, the injury-ravaged Canaries were forced to play Marco Stiepermann up front in place of the injured Teemu Pukki, while former Northern Ireland goalkeeper McGovern made his first start since a 5-1 loss to Aston Villa on 5 October 2019 following Tim Krul's midweek injury.

Norwich could only field six of the permitted nine substitutes - five of whom were academy players alongside the experienced Christoph Zimmermann while Coventry made five changes with Wilson making his first league start in place of the injured Marko Marosi.

The Sky Blues went close after 19 minutes when Jamie Allen headed over from close range, but that seemed to galvanise the Canaries as Wilson thwarted them three times before giving away the penalty - which he hotly disputed - as Stiepermann was stopped on the edge of the box before a fine double save from Josh Martin and Placheta.

Coventry started the second half well and Giles' near-post strike forced McGovern to make a good save as the home side failed to create many clear-cut chances - and they were made to pay thanks to substitute Biamou's late strike.

To compound the late goal, Norwich's injury problems also grew as Max Aarons had to be helped off the field in stoppage time.
