Coventry City have been promoted to the Championship in the most extraordinary of ways.

The Sky Blues, League One's runaway leaders, are now the champions after their third division rivals voted in favour of lifting them and Rotherham United up into the Championship using points-per-game.

This morning, in an unprecedented meeting of all 71 EFL clubs, it was agreed in overwhelming numbers that points-per-game was the fairest way to conclude league seasons that cannot be completed on the pitch.

It was also agreed that promotions and relegation must be honoured in all EFL divisions and that the play-offs must not exceed four teams.

The outcome of that vote was announced at 1pm and attention quickly turned to the second and final vote of the day for Coventry with CEO Dave Boddy set to return to the virtual ballot box to vote either in favour of or against ending the season with immediate effect.

Like the morning's vote, 51 per cent of clubs were required to sway a majority and decide the club's promotion fate - and that number was reached.

The promotion is the second for the club in three seasons and will see them back in the Championship after an eight-year exile from English football's second division.

Rotherham, their closest rivals in the race for the title, will join them while Wycombe Wanderers, Oxford United, Portsmouth and Fleetwood Town will do battle in the play-offs during July.

Today's news will come as a major blow for Sunderland and Peterborough United who will remain in League One despite being within touching distance of the play-off places with so many games still to be played.

Tomorrow the EFL board will meet for their weekly board members' meeting when the result of the vote will be ratified, finalising the club's promotion.

Broadgate Square in the city centre was a sea of sky blue this evening as hundreds of fans gathered to celebrate the news Coventry City are back in the Championship.

The Sky Blues, League One's runaway leaders, were declared the champions today after their rivals voted in favour of lifting them and Rotherham United up into the Championship using points-per-game.

This morning, in an unprecedented meeting of all 71 EFL clubs, it was agreed in overwhelming numbers that points-per-game was the fairest way to conclude league seasons that cannot be completed on the pitch.

CoventryLive reporter Josh Layton joined fans shortly after 5pm in Broadgate Square and followed the jubilant celebrations.

The fans gathered gradually, just after 5pm there were around 60 or so but their ranks swelled to hundreds as the evening progressed.

As the celebrations got into full swing Josh said: “Blue flares have been let off and Sky Blues flags placed around the Lady Godiva statue.

“Club anthems are being played with supporters joining in.

“It has the feel of a merry outdoor pub session and there are huge chants of ‘champions are going up’.

“A Union Jack Sky Blues flag was also draped from the Lady Godiva statue, dance music in the background and a general party atmosphere.”

As the gathering got under way fans wore their Coventry City shirts with pride, some opening beers to toast the club’s success and the anthem The Sky Blue Song rang out.
