Players at League One leaders Coventry City have "unanimously agreed" to take a 25% wage deferral because of the coronavirus pandemic

The club have opted to follow a proposal by the English Football League and Professional Footballers' Association to defer parts of salaries.

Coventry said that the deferral is "for the foreseeable future".

"We feel that we are playing our part in what is an extremely testing time," said a statement from the players.

"The players have held discussions amongst ourselves and club staff on the best way of helping to safeguard Coventry City in the immediate future amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"From these discussions we, the players, have unanimously agreed to take a 25% wage deferral for the foreseeable future.

"We wish to help the club overcome some short-term financial difficulties that the majority of teams at this level are facing."

The Sky Blues, in pursuit of a return to English football's second tier for the first time since 2012, were five points clear at the top of the table when the game went into lockdown in mid-March.

Preston North End are demanding Coventry City are handed a transfer embargo

A number of EFL sides, including Preston North End, are demanding that clubs who cut or defer paying the wages of their players during the coronavirus crisis are given transfer embargos.

Teams across the Premier League and the EFL, including Coventry City, have cut or deferred the payment of wages.

But according to The Sun, certain second-tier sides are furious with the decision and want to see the UEFA, the FA and the EFL act.

One Championship club chairman has told the newspaper: “It is just kicking the can down the road. These clubs should be in for a transfer embargo.

“Why should those who balance the books and pay their players in full be punished? We won’t sit back and watch these teams make signings.”

Preston boss Alex Neil, whose side are still paying players and staff in full, agreed when the question was put to him and has publicly backed the calls.

"If people are taking wage cuts or deferrals then people are putting cases forward that they shouldn't be allowed to sign any other players," Neil told LancsLive.

"Because if they can't currently pay the players they have got then why should they then be allowed to use the money they have deferred from wages to then invest in their squad to bring better or more players in?

"I don't think that clubs who have run their finances in an organised and good manner should then be hampered and hamstrung when other teams are maybe slashing wages and then the window opens and we get out-bid for a player that they have brought with money that they have deferred from another player.

He added: "That cannot be fair. So it will be really interesting to see how that comes out in the wash."
