Coventry City triumph at Ipswich Town to build a buffer at the top of League One

Coventry City strengthened their grip on top spot while further denting mid-season promotion favourites Ipswich Town’s hopes of a swift return to the Championship.

The Portman Road victory, courtesy of a single goal from Matty Godden, heaped more pressure on under-fire Tractor Boys’ boss Paul Lambert, whose side suffered their seventh defeat from their last nine League One encounters.

It wasn’t the best of performances but it was another magnificent three points against one of the division’s big boys and extended City’s unbeaten run to 14 games and their lead at the top of the division to five points after second placed Rotherham lost at Rochdale.

Mark Robins named an unchanged side to face a Town team with six changes to their midweek defeat to Fleetwood on a day when all three main strikers Kayden Jackson, James Norwood and Will Keane were out injured.

City made a confident start and took another early lead when Liam Walsh threaded through a lovely ball to Godden in the box, whereupon the striker controlled and turned in one slick move before firing his shot across goalkeeper Will Norris and into the far bottom corner with barely 16 minutes on the clock.

The visitors looked well in control in the first half where they edged the possession against a nervous looking home side who struggled to create openings until the half hour mark when Jon Nolan beat the off-side trap to race through onto a long ball over the top.

But with just the keeper to beat, the midfielder sent a soft header into Marko Marosi’s arms rather than bringing the ball down and picking his spot.

Freddie Sears then tested Marosi for the first time five minutes before the break when he ran onto a flick-on and forced the keeper to dive low to his right as Town finished the half growing in confidence.

The home side started the second period as they’d finished the first, looking bright from the restart but just lacking a cutting edge to finish off some excellent movement from their front three in the final third.

Godden had the chance to kill the game, however, on 50 minutes when he raced onto a Fankaty Dabo ball in behind but fired over the bar.

The Sky Blues struggled to carve out clear cut chances and Jordan Shipley and Amadou Bakayoko were thrown on midway through the half to add fresh legs, replacing Jamie Allen and Godden, while continuing to defend a slender lead.

That dragged into four long and nervous minutes of added time but Robins’s men hung on to keep the clean sheet and send the 1,740 fans home happy, ending the game by singing, “We’re going to win the league, we’re going to win the league...”
