O’Hare and Biamou on target for victorious Sky Blues

Super subs Callum O'Hare and Max Biamou secured victory for Coventry City over Southend United to move them up to second place in the division.

The Sky Blues struggled to break down the Shrimpers in a frustrating first half but the double substitution early in the second half had the desired effect with O’Hare giving Mark Robins’s side the lead on the hour before Biamou doubled the advantage 11 minutes from time, leaving the 1,588-strong travelling fans to sing, “We’re going to win the league....”.

City dominated the first half but had very little to show for their 72 per cent share of possession in a frustrating opening 45 against the League One strugglers who included five Under-23 development players in their side.

Jordan Shipley went closest to breaking the deadlock with an early shot that forced goalkeeper Mark Oxley to save before thumping the post with a first time shot after being set up by Sam McCallum.

And Coventry hit the woodwork for a second time when Liam Walsh sent in a 25-yard free-kick that rattled the crossbar seven minutes from the interval before Michael Rose was denied by a comfortable save after getting his head to a Zain Westbrooke corner.

The home side, meanwhile, failed to hit a single shot on target in the opening half when they appeared content to soak up the pressure and play on the counter attack against Robins’s men who were guilty of over playing at times, taking too many passes in the final third as they looked to break their opponents down.

United started the second half the brighter of the two sides, prompting the City boss to make an early change as he sent on Biamou and O’Hare for Shipley and Westbrooke.

And the change paid almost instant dividends when the Aston Villa loan star went an a diagonal run, ghosting past two or three players before getting to the edge of the box and coolly slotting home into the far bottom corner of the net, to give the visitors a 60th minute lead.

Sam McCallum almost doubled the advantage minutes later when he hit the bar from a wind assisted free-kick before Fankaty Dabo went close to being sent off when he went in for a challenge on Sam Barrett, who went to ground, and got away with a warning.

Dabo was already on a yellow card and the manager took the matter into his own hands shortly after, replacing him with Josh Pask for the remainder of the game.

Biamou then sealed the points 11 minutes from time when he ran onto a long ball and beat a defender and keeper, who dived at his feet, before poking home the ball which went in off the inside of the post.

Attendance: 7,278 (1,588 away)
