Godden fires Sky Blues to huge win

Matty Godden stepped off the bench to hand Coventry City a huge three points against promotion rivals Portsmouth and lift them up to third in the table with their 14th League One victory of the campaign.

The striker went on in the 82nd minute and scored in the 84th in a hugely competitive game at St Andrew’s short on quality but high on drama as Marko Marosi pulled off a brilliant save to deny an equaliser at the death as the Sky Blues brought an end to Pompey’s outstanding nine-game winning run.

Chances were few and far between in a scrappy first half when the Sky Blues struggled to impose themselves on a big and physical side who were well organised at the back.

Liam Walsh and Callum O’Hare tested the keeper from distance with the only two attempts on goal from either side in the opening half an hour when the home side also edged possession.

Jamie Allen was the only other to have an attempt of any note before the break when centre-forward Amadou Bakayoko – who was too isolated at times – laid the ball off to him to enable him to lift the ball over the keeper but also the bar.

City, meanwhile, were excellent at the back in the opening 45 minutes when they were forced to defend a string of balls into the box, with the back three blocking and heading away the danger, with the visitors not managing a single attempt on goal in the first half.

Robins’s men found it hard to get their passing game going as the opposition got tight and never let them settle for a second, and were guilty of some sloppy passing as well as hoofing it away and invited pressure straight back on them as Portsmouth began to impose themselves more in the second half.

Bakayoko went close when he stretched to get his head to an Allen centre but could only send the ball wide before the visitors made a double substitution, sending on Ellis Harrison and Marcus Harness who help turn the tide and build momentum for the opposition.

Coventry defended a string of corners and Marosi was called upon to make his first save on 65 minutes to deny striker Harrison as the home side managed to weather the storm before sending on Max Biamou in a bid to pep things up at the other end.

Godden was then sent on for the last eight minutes and promptly scored after barely two minutes of being on the pitch when O’Hare lifted the ball over to him in the box and he got a touch to send it past the stranded Alex Bass to send the fans wild.

Pompey then piled on the pressure with Marosi coming to the rescue with a fine save to deny Cameron McGeehan an equaliser in the 90th minute ahead of three nervous minutes for stoppages.

But City continued to defend stoutly with the back three more than playing their part in a magnificent clean sheet.
