Max Biamou nets late winner after Amadou Bakayoko strike



Max Biamou bagged a 90th minute winner as Coventry City stretched their impressive unbeaten League One run to eight games with a 2-1 victory over bottom club Bolton Wanderers.

Amadou Bakayoko gave the Sky Blues a third minute lead but Mark Robins’s men couldn’t find the all important second goal and were punished on 77 minutes when Dennis Politic side footed home from close range.

But substitute Biamou grabbed the glory in the final minute of normal time, ahead of seven long minutes for stoppages, to secure the vital three points that leaves them two points off second placed Wycombe.

City got off to a flying start when Bakayoko headed home a Fankaty Dabo cross at the far post with just two minutes and four seconds on the clock.

The big centre-forward had plenty of time to place his effort and add to his midweek goal in the FA Cup on a day when he started ahead of the injured Matty Godden.

The striker had the ball in the back of the net a second time shortly after but his par post effort was ruled out for off-side, while Dabo and Walsh both tested the keeper in an impressive start to the game.

City had Marko Marosi to thank, however, in the 20th minute when the impressive Politic turned Michael Rose inside out to enable him to get a shot away, only for the keeper to get a vital touch to send it wide for a corner.

Wanderers – a big and physical side – grew into the game, getting stronger as the half went on and then starting the second half brightly as they looked for an equaliser to cancel out Coventry’s increasingly fragile looking lead.

Big striker Daryl Murphy thought he’d got it on 67 minutes when he sent a decent header goalwards, only for Marosi to tip over the bar.

And from the resulting corner City promptly raced up the other end of the field on the counter attack with Callum O’Hare playing Jamie Allen through on goal, only for Remi Matthews to come out and make a block in the Bolton goal.

Max Biamou was sent on for Bakayoko and almost got the much-needed second goal when he headed straight at the keeper and then sent an overhead kick narrowly wide.

But Bolton got themselves back on level terms on 77 minutes when Chris O’Grady sent in a low cross from the left that was turned in by Politic in the six yard box amid poor defending from the Sky Blues.

But City kept plugging away and finally restored their lead when an Allen shot was spilled by the keeper and Biamou was on hand to slot home in the 90th minute ahead of seven long minutes of added time.
