Shipley hands Sky Blues victory at Keepmoat Stadium

Coventry City chalked up their third consecutive League One win on the road to stay right on the heels of the top two automatic promotion positions.

Jordan Shipley gave the Sky Blues a first-half lead against Doncaster Rovers, who piled on the pressure during a second half fight-back at the Keepmoat Stadium in what was a real test of City’s defensive resolve.

It was a tight and cagey start to the game with Rovers enjoying plenty of early possession as City struggled to find their rhythm.

But 20 minutes in and the Sky Blues finally got into their stride with a sustained spell of pressure before Shipley found the back of the net with a route one goal that started from Marko Marosi.

Matty Godden knocked it down into Shipley’s path and the midfielder drove forward and let fly with a low left foot shot that beat the keeper and hit the far bottom corner of the net.

Rovers felt they should have had a penalty when Kyle McFadzean tackled Niall Ennis just inside the box but the referee waved play on as Coventry looked largely in control to the break, aside from a couple of late corners as they took a slender lead into the second half.

The home side launched a fight-back straight from the re-start when Michael Rose headed off the line to deny James Coppinger a goal on his 39th birthday before Marosi was called upon to make his first save, punching clear a powerful Jon Taylor effort.

Donny built a real head of steam as City kept giving the ball away and struggling to get out of their own half.

But Robins’s men weathered the storm and a tactical change saw Jamie Allen add a bit of guile to help them keep the ball better, the midfielder feeding Callum O’Hare in the 67th minute and the Aston Villa loan man thumping the right-hand post with the keeper well beaten.

Darren Moore’s men continued to push for an equaliser but City defended brilliantly – the back three outstanding on the day to help keep the clean sheet and take home a valuable three points after five long and nervous minutes of added time.
