Stunning Godden hat-trick helps Sky Blues topple League One leaders

A Matty Godden hat-trick helped Coventry City record their first League One away win in style by beating leaders Wycombe Wanderers – becoming the first team to inflict a defeat on the Chairboys in their own back yard this season.

It’s taken ten attempts for the Sky Blues to achieve their first three points on the road this season and it finally came courtesy of a brilliant performance at Adams Park.

Sam McCallum lit the touchpaper as early as the third minute before Wanderers got back on level terms when Adebayo Akinfenwa got in behind on 14 minutes.

But Mark Robins’s men restored their lead two minutes later when McCallum was tripped in the box and Godden coolly slotted home his first, and the striker increased the lead when he rounded Ryan Allsop just before the break.

Godden then added a fourth City goal and his third when he hit a lovely left-footed shot on the counter attack to kill any hopes of a second half fight-back.

City thoroughly deserved their comfortable half-time lead after enjoying 65 per cent of possession and hitting ten attempts at goal, five of which hit the target against the table toppers who were restricted to just five attempts, only two of which were on target in the opening 45.

The opening goal was a superb strike from McCallum who cut onto his right foot and let fly into the far top corner in a terrific start from the visitors.

That positive opening, however, looked to have been wasted when poor defending let in heavy-weight front man Akinfenwa who beat the off-side trap to slot home past the exposed Marko Marosi.

But Coventry restored their lead minutes later as McCallum ventured into the box where he was tripped almost straight from the re-start before Godden stepped up to convert the penalty.

And the striker increased City’s lead further just before the break when Jordan Shipley let a long forward pass run into his path, leaving the front man to go round the keeper and slot home from a tight angle.

Godden then completed his glorious hat-trick five minutes into the second half when he thumped home a brilliant left-foot shot from a Jordan Shipley pull-back to give the visitors a three goal cushion.

And Robins’s men continued to look good on their comfortable lead throughout the second half when the 1,800 travelling fans sang, “We want five, we want five.”

Amadou Bakayoko threw himself at a Shipley cross but couldn’t connect when he went on for the hero of the day who left the field 15 minutes from time, safe in the knowledge that his work was done.
