Zain Westbrooke strike secures 1-0 win

Coventry City got back to winning ways to record their eighth victory at St Andrew’s to keep them in touch with their promotion rivals going into a blank Boxing Day.

Zain Westbrooke scored the only goal of the game in a superb first half attacking display from the Sky Blues who had to defend their slender lead with their lives amid a second half fight-back from the visitors after being unable to put them to the sword.

But they held out to take the full three points and move up to fifth in the table.

City bossed the play in one of the most dominant first half displays from Mark Robins’s men in the league so far this season, albeit with just one shot on target – a hard and low effort from Liam Kelly – in the opening half an hour when the Imps defended stoutly with two solid banks of four.

Lincoln appeared content to sit and soak up the pressure, managing just one attempt on goal in the entire opening 45, and that was off target.

But the Sky Blues’ pressure was rewarded just after the half hour mark when another Kelly shot was parried away by the keeper, falling out to Westbrooke who struck the ball hard and low into the bottom corner from 12 yards out.

Jordan Shipley passed up the opportunity to double the lead as City upped their shot count, finishing the half in rampant form with ten attempts and four on target from a 68 per cent share of the possession.

A half-time team-talk resulted in the visitors coming out a different animal after the break when they suddenly took control and had City on the back foot in a frantic 15 minute spell.

Marko Marosi made his first save of the game, and an important one at that, when he flung himself to the deck to get a firm hand to deny a powerful Michael Bostwick attempt from a corner.

Jake Hesketh followed up but that was blocked on the line by Shipley amid appeals for handball and a string of five corners in quick succession from the Imps’ attempted fight-back.

City weathered the storm and regained their composure, almost increasing their lead when a lovely string of passes and one/twos resulted in Matty Godden finding space to shoot, but his hard and low effort was saved low by the keeper.

And Coventry managed the game well to see out the victory amid four minutes of stoppage time.
