Sky Blues suffer late frustration

A last minute goal from Sunderland denied Coventry City their first League One win on the road this season.

Dom Hyam gave the Sky Blues the lead midway through the first half but the Black Cats battled back after the break and grabbed a late equaliser from substitute Benji Kimpioka to deny Mark Robins’s men what would have been a deserved three points from an impressive performance at the Stadium of Light.

Liam Walsh was the first player to test the keeper when he hit a ferocious 30-yarder that former City stopper Lee Burge tipped over for an early corner as Coventry started brightly, attempting to take the game to the home side.

And although they had to weather a ten minute spell it was Coventry who took the lead from a three man move that started with a lovely floated in cross from Zain Westbrooke.

That was headed out to Michael Rose who sent it back in for Dom Hyam to head over the line in the six yard box to put City in front on 25 minutes.

The Black Cats tested City’s defence as they attempted to get themselves back on level terms but it was the visitors who finished the half the stronger when Amadou Bakayoko headed narrowly wide under pressure from the keeper on the stroke of half-time.

City had hit 11 shots in the opening 45, four of which were on target, compared to the home side who had managed just four attempts and one hit straight at Marko Marosi from a free-kick.

The visitors started the second half well, playing most of their football in the opposition half and forcing the Wearsiders to defend in numbers, looking very much in control of the game and the more likely to score.

Sunderland, however, kept plugging away and built up a head of steam, ending the game strongly with plenty of pressure to test City’s defensive resolve.

And that resolve was finally broken in the last minute of normal time when City failed to clear their lines and sub Kimpioka was left unmarked in the box to slot home with his left foot.
