Liam Walsh and Jordan Shipley secure 2-1 win

A sensational solo goal from Liam Walsh got Coventry City back to winning ways in the league with their seventh victory at St Andrew’s.

The Bristol City loan man waltzed past at least three Rochdale players before hitting a powerful finish to secure the full three points and lift the Sky Blues up to third in League One.

Mark Robins’s men had to battle back from a goal down but an equaliser from Jordan Shipley just before the break and superb second from Walsh midway through the second half saw Coventry record a deserved victory.

It was a familiar story for the Sky Blues who once again dominated possession at ‘home’ but looked vulnerable to the counter attack by a cautious opposition happy to soak up the pressure and hit their opponents on the break.

And that’s exactly what Dale did just before the half hour mark when they registered their first shot on target and hit the back of the net.

The move came from the right where Callum Camps was given too much space and sent in a low ball to the unmarked Ian Henderson who slotted past the exposed Marko Marosi in the Coventry goal.

But they fought back and got themselves on level terms just before the break when Shipley timed his run to get on the end of a lovely ball over the top from Zain Westbrooke.

Shipley’s initial effort was blocked by the keeper but he showed great determination to pounce on the loose ball and slot past a covering defender into the bottom corner to get City back in the game.

Coventry continued to boss possession and play most of their football in the final third in the second half but chances were few and far between until the 55th minute when Westbrooke picked out Amadou Bakayoko with a square pass from the byline. But the big striker’s first time shot from three yards out and in the centre of the goal flew, unbelievably, wide of the target.

But Walsh produced a vital bit of magic when he picked up the ball in midfield and set off towards goal, twisting and turning, beating man after man before picking his spot with a brilliant finish to win the game in the 72nd minute.

City had to fight on to the end, however, throwing their bodies on the line and defending in numbers to see the game out amid four nervous minutes of stoppage time.
