Coventry City raced into a 2-0 lead to finally record their first away win of the season and book their place in the second round of the FA Cup.

It took ten attempts but the Sky Blues have finally done it, earning a comfortable victory on the road in an entertaining first round tie at League Two Colchester United.

Goals from Jordan Shipley and Sam McCallum put the visitors firmly in control inside the first 26 minutes at the JobServe Community Stadium where the Sky Blues dominated possession and passed their opponents off the park.

City took just ten minutes to open the scoring when Shipley latched onto a lovely weighted ball over the top from Zain Westbrooke and hooked home with his right foot.

The Sky Blues dominated the play against their League Two opponents who simply couldn’t live with the fluidity of the visitors’ attack after manager Mark Robins came up with a master plan to combat his striker crisis.

With only Amadou Bakayoko fit or available from his pool of front men, the City boss deployed a wing-backs system with a box midfield that saw Westbrooke and Shipley cause all sorts of problems for the U’s with their movement behind and around the big centre-forward.

But it was left wing-back Sam McCallum who doubled the lead, the young defender hitting a 30-yard free-kick deep into the area where it bounced up to beat the unsuspecting keeper Dean Gerken.

Coventry continued to boss possession after the break, enjoying 63 per cent of the ball for much of the tie, while Shipley was denied a second when a nicely struck shot beat the keeper but was ruled out for off-side.

Substitute Callum O’Hare should have extended the lead on 81 minutes when he passed up the opportunity to beat the keeper from four yards after a lovely pass across the face of goal to the unmarked midfielder from the brilliant Westbrooke.
