Match report and reaction to late Sky Blues heartbreak

Coventry City were denied at the death after being a minute away from upsetting the league leaders.

A spectacular 85th minute finish from Max Biamou looked to have won the game for the Sky Blues at top of the table Peterborough United, but in-form Mo Eisa spoiled the party with a stoppage time equaliser in a pulsating game at London Road.

Amadou Bakayoko gave the visitors an early lead before having a second ruled out for hand ball against Posh who tested the brilliant Marko Marosi six times over the course of the game.

The City keeper, however, was beaten from 12 yards by Marcus Maddison after Ivan Toney was brought down in the box for a 52nd minute equaliser from the penalty spot.

Biamou, who had been superb throughout, restored the lead but Posh’s never-say-die attitude saw them snatch a share of the spoils with seconds left on the clock.

Mark Robins’s men could have been ahead inside the first minute after Max Biamou set up Callum O’Hare who scurried into the box, got a lucky ricochet and then failed to beat the keeper, Christy Pym, who dropped down to block his effort that should really have been lifted over the Posh stopper as he committed himself low.

Marko Marosi, who was in inspired form, came to the rescue for the first of several times with a terrific save to his left to deny a ferocious 25-yard shot from Marcus Maddison before Biamou headed clear off the line from the resulting corner in an entertaining, end-to-end game at London Road.

But it was the Sky Blues who got themselves in front when the excellent Biamou – making his first start since August 2018 – played Amadou Bakayoko through to the left of goal where the big man steadied himself and hit a clinical left foot finish past Pym.

The 12th minute goal filled the visitors with even more confidence as every player rose to the challenge, more than matching their high riding opponents in an entertaining first half that saw Bakayoko have a second goal ruled out for hand ball before Marosi pulled off another good save, this time to deny George Boyd equalising just before the break.

The home side came out all guns blazing in the second half when they were gifted a way back into the game when Kyle McFadzean brought down Ivan Toney in the box, leaving Maddison to equalise from the penalty spot.

Biamou went close to restoring City’s lead just after the hour when he executed a trademark bicycle kick from a free-kick that was headed back across the face of goal to the striker, only for the keeper to make a decent save.

And the Frenchman had another chance in the box, only to fire across the face of goal.

But he made no mistake with a spectacular finish fove minutes from normal time, only to have that cancelled out by Eisa’s late leveller in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
