Sky Blues' hunt for goals continues

The magnificent Sky Blue Army turned out in their numbers but Coventry City couldn’t send them home celebrating with full three points against a resilient MK Dons.

A total of 6,274 fans travelled to Stadium:MK to cheer Mark Robins’s men to success, only to come away with a frustrating goalless draw as a first win on the road continues to evade the Sky Blues.

City had the better of the first half when the home side didn’t have a single chance on goal but both sides had chances to win the game after the break, Jordy Hiwula missing a penalty and the Dons hitting the crossbar in a livelier and more open second 45.

Coventry enjoyed plenty of possession from the first whistle when they played some bright, attacking football but took their time to carve out any clear cut chances on goal, their first coming on 26 minutes when Liam Walsh slipped a lovely ball through to Callum O’Hare, with Jordan Shipley executing a smart dummy on its way, but the Aston Villa loan man’s final sliding touch was blocked by a defender.

Seconds later the Sky Blues recycled the ball with Sam McCallum sending in a decent cross from the left which Amadou Bakayoko – in for the injured Matty Godden – headed wide of the left-hand post.

The full-back and striker combined again on the half hour when the big front man was left thumping the turf in frustration after sending his header narrowly wide for a second time, while Hiwula had a shot from the edge of the box deflected wide just before the break to end a frustrating 45 minutes for the visitors who enjoyed 56 per cent of the possession and had six attempts on goal, albeit none on target.

Robins’s men were desperate for a spark to liven things up and that almost came in the shape of a goal early in the second half when Shipley hit a hard and low free-kick from 20 yards out that was denied by a brilliant save by Lee Nicholls, who dived to his left to push the ball out for a corner.

City then passed up a golden opportunity to get ahead when Hiwula was brought down by the keeper as he ran through, looking favourite to beat him, but the striker stepped up to take the resulting penalty which was saved low to the stopper’s left.

Marko Marosi was called upon for the first time at the other end on 55 minutes when Hiram Boateng had the Dons’ first attempt, the City keeper punching clear before City had a penalty appeal waved away on the hour when Alex Gilbey tackled Liam Walsh in the box.

Max Biamou and Gervane Kastaneer replaced Bakayoko and Hiwula midway through the second period when the game was a lot more open and looking like the result could go either way.

Dons’ substitute Ben Reeves almost snatched victory four minutes from time when he let fly from 25 yards, beating Marosi but not the crossbar as he watched his powerful effort bounce away from danger.

But despite both sides battling on to try to win the game through four minutes of added time, City had to settle for a single point that was enough to take them back into the play-off places in sixth place.
