Amadou Bakayoko nets late equaliser for Sky Blues

Super sub Amadou Bakayoko helped Coventry City maintain their impressive unbeaten start to the new League One season in another thrilling encounter at St Andrew’s.

Forced to come from behind again, the Sky Blues were left to rue missed opportunities in an entertaining first half that saw then trailing at the break.

Despite enjoying the majority of possession and getting at their opponents with some bright attacking play, Mark Robins’s men were caught on the counter attack just before half-time, midfielder Ben Whiteman finishing well for the visitors.

But they battled back in the second 45 when late substitute Bakayoko stepped off the bench to secure his side a share of the spoils, hooking home in the 88th minute.

The game started at frantic pace with action at both ends and each side guilty of wasted opportunities.

Rovers should have punished a stray Liam Walsh pass as early as the fourth minute but Niall Ennis dragged his shot wide of Marko Marosi’s left hand post, while at the other end Jordan Shipley sent Jordy Hiwula in behind with a brilliant pass, only for the forward to miss the target when it really should have been in the back of the net.

City enjoyed the better of the possession in an entertaining first half when Callum O’Hare was lively on the ball and forced the keeper to save at his near post just after the half hour mark after being played in behind by Fankaty Dabo.

But the ‘home’ side were then caught on the counter attack with a blistering run down the right that had Coventry chasing back in numbers and unable to cut out the pull back to midfielder Whiteman, who had time and space to pick his spot with a powerful first time shot to beat Marosi in his bottom right-hand corner.

Coventry desperately tried to get back on level terms in the four remaining minutes of the opening half when Dabo pulled the ball back for Matty Godden whose shot was blocked on the line.

Donny started the second half strongly, clearly looking to get the job done as Kieran Sadlier got away from Kyle McFadzean near the corner flag to set up James Coppinger who screwed wide with all the goal to aim at – a big let off for the Sky Blues – before Jon Taylor fired over from another good chance.

However, Gervane Kastaneer livened things up when he went on for Jobello just after the hour, the Dutch winger causing the opposition all sorts of problems with his runs into the box, one of which saw City denied a penalty appeal for handball.

Bakayoko was then thrown eight minutes from time and popped up in the right place as City’s pressure gathered momentum, hooking home brilliantly from a McFadzean pass in a crowded box to equalise in the 88th minute.

And Kastaneer almost proved to be the hero at the death when he set off on a blistering counter attack, beating two players before slipping the ball to O’Hare who couldn’t quite get there ahead of the keeper.

Attendance: 7,010 (811 away) - City’s biggest attendance at St Andrew’s yet.
