Sky Blues maintain unbeaten start

Coventry City maintained their unbeaten start to League One with a single-goal victory over Gillingham.

The Sky Blues were imperious in the first half, scoring through the recalled Dominic Hyam and creating several more chances.

However, a failure to add to their total meant they had to survive a nervy second period to record their third win at St Andrew’s.

Mark Robins made two changes to the team which so memorably drew at Portsmouth on Tuesday.

Hyam replaced Kyle McFadzean and Sam McCallum came in for the suspended Fankaty Dabo - even so the ‘home’ team didn’t miss a beat.

They utterly dominated Gillingham in the opening 45 minutes and could have gone in more than 1-0 up at the break.

Matty Godden caused the Gills defence no end of problems and might have ended the period with a couple of goals to himself.

Just four minutes had gone when Wesley Jobello came in off the right flank and lasered a brilliant diagonal cross towards Godden.

The striker rose well and sent a powerful header downwards but Jack Bonham pushed it back out and dived on the loose ball.

On the quarter hour Brandon Mason intercepted a risky cross-field free kick and flew forward, releasing Godden up to the area.

This time his attempt to chip Bonham lacked height.

Robins only had to wait another ten minutes before seeing his team take the lead.

Bonham flapped at a left wing corner and Hyam popped up at the back post to poke home.

Godden and Jordan Shipley had further openings before the midway point which went unconverted.

Gills were far more bright in the second half and pressed the Sky Blues back straight from the off.

But for all the crosses they sent into the Coventry area they remained vulnerable themselves.

An excellent delivery from McCallum eluded both Godden and Jordy Hiwula at the back and just after the hour Jordan Shipley’s daisy-cutter forced a low stop from Bonham.

Aston Villa loan youngster Callum O’Hare came on with a quarter of the match remaining and caused his new team-mates problems when he bundled Elliot List over inside the Coventry D.

Mikael Ndjoli took the free kick and rammed it to the top right corner only to be denied by a flying save from Marko Marosi.

With five minutes to go the Slovak was on hand to claw clear after Connor Oglive’s close range effort had been blocked.

Attendance: 5,624 - City’s lowest in League One so far.
