Nine-man Sky Blues show heart to fight back and claim point

One of the games of the season has already taken place after nine-man Coventry City fought back from two goals down to claim a point in an enthralling 3-3 draw with Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Jordy Hiwula handed City the lead inside three minutes, but Ronan Curtis, John Marquis and Gareth Evans turned the game on its head.

Matt Godden converted a penalty, before Michael Rose became the hero when he equalised in the closing stages.

The Sky Blues got off to a dream start when Godden was sent away down the left hand side, in acres of space.

He galloped forwards and picked out an inch perfect pass for strike partner Hiwula, who controlled the ball and fired it into the roof of the net.

It was a goal that silenced a packed Fratton Park, save for the near 1,000 away fans who reacted deliriously.

The lead, though, lasted just seven minutes.

Harness, who was a menace on the right all evening, wriggled away from Brandon Mason and found Curtis with a perfectly weighted cross. He headed home powerfully.

Before half time, Pompey nudged themselves in front.

It was a lovely move, albeit, but Marosi will not be pleased with his dealing of it; Brandon Haunstrup was sent scampering down the left and his low ball across goal was only parried by the City keeper and tapped in by the waiting Marquis from a yard out.

While the game was nicely poised at the beginning of the second half, it seemed over as a contest by the hour mark.

Evans robbed McFadzean on the edge of the penalty area and fired past Marosi, before Dabo was shown his marching orders for a second yellow after handling the ball.

A ray of hope was offered with 15 minutes to go when Godden was handed the ball to put on the penalty spot, and he duly obliged from 12 yards, but any hopes appears snuffed out when sub Gervane Kastaneer was shown a red card too, for two bookable offences.

The quite incredible comeback was completed, however, when Rose fired in amid a goalmouth scramble with five minutes to go.

Pompey piled on the pressure, but the nine man Sky Blues held on.
