Three unbeaten as the Sky Blues win at St Andrew's

Coventry City maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-0 victory over Bristol Rovers at St Andrew’s.

City were rewarded for their patience and resilience as Jordan Shipley’s composed effort and Gervane Kastaneer’s first Sky Blues goal gave Mark Robins’ side a hard-fought three points.

The Sky Blues made an intense approach to proceedings, closing down Graham Coughlan’s side deep in opposition territory and forcing them to concede possession on several occasions.

Making his first league start for the Sky Blues, Matt Godden was inches away from breaking the deadlock 20 minutes in when he smartly swivelled his defender before firing a venomous low effort that rattled the outside of the woodwork.

Rovers proved to be a difficult outfit to break down as City found themselves in numerous good positions, but were unable to apply a killer touch to their attacking play.

However, with just seconds left of the first-half, the Sky Blues made their breakthrough with an excellent team goal.

Some tidy interchanges allowed Godden to feed Jobello down the right and the winger pulled it back into the penalty area where Shipley was waiting, and the midfielder made no mistake with a delightful finish.

City started the second-half on the backfoot and were forced to battle hard as Bristol searched desperately for an equaliser.

McFadzean and Rose dealt with everything thrown at them as the Sky Blues displayed their tenacity and toughness to overcome the recurrent Rovers attacks.

In an attempt to galvanise his tiring team, Robins brought on Kastaneer and within seconds of him coming onto the pitch, the winger cut inside onto his left foot and fired an incredible effort into the left corner, ricocheting in off the post to send Sky Blues fans into delirium.
