Hiwula and Enobakhare seal second straight win

The Sky Blues kept their faint play-off hopes alive with a welcome home win against rock bottom Bradford City who look to be heading for League Two.

Jordy Hiwula opened the scoring against his former club with a clinical eighth minute finish before the Bantams were reduced to ten men when centre-back Nathaniel Knight-Percival was sent off for two yellow card offences just before the break.

Mark Robins’s men pushed forward looking for a second goal after the break when Hiwula should have had a hat-trick, the forward missing two gilt-edged chances to kill the game dead before Tom Davies turned hero at the back by clearing off the line to deny an equaliser.

But a bit of brilliance from Bright Enobakhare finally settled the supporters’ nerves three minutes from time when the Wolves’ loan man was picked out by Liam Kelly and effortlessly beat the keeper.

City, who made one change with Sam McCallum coming in for the injured Brandon Mason at left-back, raced into an early lead at the Ricoh Arena.

Hiwula extended his goal tally to 12 this season when Kelly hit a delightful pass to send him twisting and turning in the box where he left two defenders on their backsides before beating the keeper with a precise finish into the far bottom corner.

Enobakhare almost doubled the lead when he pulled wide of his marker but thumped the right-hand post and Hiwula was denied by the keeper at his near post in the first half.

Bradford, meanwhile, were thwarted by a decent save from Lee Burge who got a firm hand to prevent the equaliser before the visitors were reduced to ten men when Knight-Percival was given his marching orders just before the halfway stage.

Hiwula had the chance to double the lead early in the second half when a brilliant three man move opened the door.

Luke Thomas played the ball across the 18-yard line to Enobakhare who hit a delightful back-flick to send it on to the striker in space to the left of goal. But with all the goal to aim at and just the keeper to beat, the striker somehow put the ball wide of the far post.

And minutes later the former Bantam fluffed his lines again when the ball was played into his feet from the left and he just needed to place it round the keeper and a defender, only for a centre-back to slide in and make a block.

Defender Davies, who kept his place in the side as Jordan Willis returned to the matchday squad, was outstanding alongside Dom Hyam at the back and cleared off the line from a Bradford corner that threatened to pull the strugglers level.

Conor Chaplin went on in a bid to find that all important second goal but the visitors were proving a tough to break down as City were guilty of over playing at times, trying to walk the ball in.

Hyam was denied with six minutes to go when a powerful header from a corner was headed off the line but Enobakhare finally secured the points with a brilliant first touch and finish after being played in by Kelly.

Attendance: 11,711 (601 away)
