Do not adjust your screens the Sky Blues did just win a NINE-goal thriller!Conor Chaplin scored a superb winner in a nine goal thriller as Coventry City achieved a magnificent victory over second from top Sunderland.
The Sky Blues were in sensational form as they raced into a 3-1 leaf inside the first 25 minutes at the Stadium of Light where no other team has won in the league this season.
Bright Enobakhare gave the Sky Blues the early lead on 11 minutes but the home side were back on level terms just three minutes later when George Honeyman scored courtesy of a wicked deflection.
Amadou Bakayoko restored City’s lead two minutes later with a fine finish before Jordy Hiwula added a third to leave the home side momentarily shell-shocked.
The Black Cats, however, battled back when a Lee Burge blunder gifted Charlie Wyke an open goal before poor defending saw Will Grigg level on the stroke of half-time.
Jordan Shipley them thumped home from 25 yards early in the second period before another deflection beat Burge as the game looked poised to go either way at 4-4.
But super sub Chaplin had the final say in a breath-taking match of the season.
City started the game full of confidence and looked dangerous every time they went forward, with Enobakhare looking a cut above against second from top Sunderland.
The front three combined for his opening goal, Bakayoko winning the ball and playing it to Hiwula who slipped it to the No.10 to curl round the keeper and into the far bottom corner.
Although City suffered a set-back shortly after, Luke Thomas then played Bakayoko clean through for a fine finish before Enobakhare fed Hiwula who cut in from the left and hit a deflected shot in off the keeper.
Coventry were the architects of their own downfall, however, when Burge came out to punch clear a cross by failed to connect cleanly and the ball fell to Wyke to turn into an open goal to make it 3-2 five minutes from the break.
And City simply couldn’t hold on to their now fragile lead to the break as Dom Hyam failed to clear quickly enough, allowing Grigg to pounce deep in first half stoppage time.
Mark Robins’s men then, remarkably, restored their lead nine minutes into the second half when Shipley smashed home from a good 25 yards out.
But yet another deflection beat Burge when Max Power hit a shot from just outside the box to level the scores at 4-4 in the 69th minute.
The Sky Blues kept going, however, and Robins sent on Charlie Wakefield and Conor Chaplin who immediately combined to put the visitors in front again, Chaplin somehow beating the keeper at his near post with a brilliant finish.
And City held out for eight long and agonising minutes of stoppage time to secure what was a historic victory.
