Hiwula and Thomas grab Sky Blues a point

Coventry City secured a creditable point at automatic promotion chasing Barnsley but the play-offs still look a tall order after Doncaster Rovers increased their grip on sixth spot.

Mark Robins’s men came from behind twice with their first and second shots of the game in each half to earn their hard-fought draw, but are still six points off Rovers who comfortably beat Walsall.

Having conceded as early as the tenth minute to an Alex Mowatt goal, Jordy Hiwula got City back on level terms in the 35th minute as the teams went in all square at half-time.

The home side came flying out of the blocks after the break, sending a couple of warning shots over the bar before an attack down the left was pulled back to Cauley Woodrow to drill home into the far corner to restore their lead.

But a fine finish from Luke Thomas – from only City’s second attempt of the game – saw Coventry back on level terms for a second time just after the hour to make for an exciting end to the League One clash when Amadou Bakayoko and Dm Hyam were both denied by the keeper.

Although City made a positive start with plenty of possession in the opening few minutes, they were picked apart all too easily in the 11th minute when the home side scored from only their second attack of the game.

It looked an absolute shambles at the back as Ryan Hedges and Mamadou Thiam got the better of Dujon Sterling, who had the chance to clear before being dispossessed and then the latter pulled the ball back into the box for Mowatt to side foot home from just outside the six yard box.

The visitors struggled to get their own attacking game going, unable to muster a single attempt on goal in the opening 34 minutes, up against one of the tightest defences in the division who had kept seven consecutive clean sheets going into the game.

But when they did finally make an attempt, they got themselves back in contention with their first shot on goal in the 35th.

Brandon Mason sent in a deep cross to the back post where Hiwula controlled the ball and hooked it with his left foot in between two defenders and into the back of the net to level the score with a brilliant finish.

The goal suddenly spark the Sky Blues to life and the remainder of the half was a lot more open, the visitors buoyed by another magnificent travelling support of 1,853 who were in full voice throughout.

But Barnsley wasted little time in restoring their lead, scoring just two minutes into the restart when City failed to deal with a break down the left wing that resulted in the ball being pulled back to striker Woodrow who hit a clinical and powerful finish.

Coventry, however, got themselves back on level terms for a second time when Bright Enobakhare managed to spread the ball to Luke Thomas on the right, just inside the box.

The winger then cut onto his left foot and picked his spot with a fine finish to take his tally to five goals this season on 61 minutes to leave the game wide open once more.

The home side pushed forward in numbers as City played on the counter attack, Amadou Bakayoko rounding the keeper on one edge of your seat occasion, only to run out of pitch, unable to slot into the empty net.

Both sides lugged it out with action at both ends and Dom Hyam being denied by the keeper before Bakayoko went close again in stoppage time when he got his head on the end of a Liam Kelly free-kick and saw it tipped onto the roof of the net.

Attendance: 13,503 (1,853 City)
