Sky Blues edge towards the play-offs with big away win

Coventry City pushed themselves to the brink of the League One play-offs after a brilliant away performance and win over promotion rivals Peterborough United.

A first half goal from Amadou Bakayoko and a second half strike from Bright Enobakhare saw the Sky Blues leapfrog Posh into seventh place and move just a point and place off sixth placed Doncaster Rovers on a day when Blackpool lost at Burton.

A total of 1,888 of the travelling Sky Blue Army cheered Mark Robins’s men all the way to victory at London Road with a win that now leaves them right in contention with eight games to go.

The only downer on the day was a nasty looking facial injury to Luke Thomas who had to be stretchered off midway through the second half.

First choice central defensive partnership Jordan Willis and Dom Hyam returned to the starting line-up from injury as two of four changes to the side, as Bright Enobakhare and the outstanding Liam Kelly were also restored to the team after missing Tuesday night’s victory over Fleetwood Town.

But it was the impressive Lee Burge who was called upon early on to keep City in the game, the goalkeeper tipping over a powerful Callum Cooke shot amid three early corners from the home side.

City took 15 minutes to get into their stride but looked threatening when they did with Jordy Hiwula turning in the box and seeing his shot blocked by the keeper before a wind assisted Brandon Mason shot thumped the crossbar from distance.

Burge came to the rescue again just short of the half hour mark when he flung himself to his right to deny Matt Godden in the box with a brilliant save.

But the visitors managed to get themselves in front three minutes from the break when Thomas played Bakayoko in behind and the big striker steadied himself and slotted past the on-rushing keeper Conor O’Malley to score.

Although the home side came out all guns blazing after the break, it was the Sky Blues who doubled their lead when a Enobakhare took advantage of a big kick upfield from Burge to slot home.

The keeper’s wind assisted punt caught United’s back four flat as Bakayoko attempted to win the header and the ball bounced to the Wolves’ loan man’s feet, leaving him to turn it goalwards from the edge of the six yard box and over the line.

Kelly then almost added a third when he sent in a powerful free-kick which O’Malley tipped onto the bar before City suffered a blow when Thomas caught a boot in the face and had to be stretchered off injured, replaced by Jordan Shipley.

City continued to play on the front foot in a superb second half showing where they continually attacked, looking to extend their lead in front of their fans who were in full-on party mode and enjoying every minute.

The two sides had to play 11 minutes of added time due to the length of time the game was halted while Thomas was treated on the pitch.

And seven minutes into the stoppage time Posh pulled one back when Louis Reed scored with a shot from outside the box that took a wicked deflection to wrong foot Burge, making for a nervous final few minutes.
