Coventry City’s push for the play-offs suffered a set-back with defeat at the hands of Burton Albion on a night of high drama at Ricoh Arena.

The Sky Blues trailed at the break to a Lucas Akins goal but managed to get themselves back on level terms from the boot of Tom Bayliss before being reduced to ten men when Bright Enobakhare was sent off for a second yellow card.

Ten man City then shot themselves in the foot when a poor clearance from goalkeeper Lee Burge went straight to Jamie Allen who restored the visitors’ lead on the hour, setting up a frustrating remainder to the game.

Mark Robins’s men started the game positively with plenty a promising approach play in the final third but suddenly found themselves trailing when they were caught in possession just short of the 20 minute mark.

Bayliss was bringing the ball out when he had the ball nicked off him and Albion counter attacked with Coventry-born Marcus Harness nipping to the byline and pulling the ball back for striker Akins to convert across Burge at the near post to give the visitors the lead against the run of play.

Albion set up with the game plan to soak up the home pressure and hit City on the break at speed and in numbers – a tactic that worked well in the first half.

And Nigel Clough’s men almost had a second just after the half hour mark when Akins had a goal disallowed after he’d handled it before sticking it in the back of the net amid a goalmouth scramble.

Despite City’s endeavour it was Albion who looked the more threatening in front of goal as Harness went close again when he beat Burge to a deep cross from left-back Colin Daniel, only to head over the bar.

Referee Neil Hair failed to re-appear after the break due to injury and was replaced by one of his assistants.

City got themselves back on level terms in the 51st minute when midfielder Bayliss snapped up na deflected effort from Luke Thomas, placing past the keeper from the edge of the six yard box.

But disaster struck three minutes later when Bright Enobakhare picked up a second yellow card, having been booked in the first half, and was promptly sent off by the replacement referee who came in for plenty of abuse from the home fans as decision after decision went against the Sky Blues.

And things went from bad to worse as Burge then handed the visitors the lead when a poor clearance went straight to Jamie Allen who picked his spot in the back of the net to end City’s five game unbeaten run.
