Bright goal keeps Mark Robins' side in the playoff hunt
A single goal from Bright Enobakhare helped Coventry City edge closer to the top six after taking maximum points at Accrington Stanley.
The Sky Blues extended their latest unbeaten run to five games with an impressive second half display and clean sheet at the Wham Stadium where they had plenty of chances to wrap things up and make the victory more comprehensive.
Neither side really imposed themselves in a poor first half that produced just three attempts on goal from City but none of which tested the Stanley keeper who fumbled an in-swinging corner from the Wolves’ loan man just before the break.
Tom Bayliss went closest when he drove forward as early as the second minute and let fly with an effort that went just wide, while Sean McConville threatened for the home side with a free-kick from the edge of the D as both sides cancelled each other out in a game devoid of any real quality in the opening half.
City edged the possession but Stanley had more attempts, six in total, in a highly forgettable 45 minutes of football when Coventry arguably lacked Luke Thomas’s pace and direct approach on the wing.
But the half-time team talk clearly did the trick in sparking the Sky Blues into life, coupled with the 58th minute introduction of the winger.
And a minute later Enobakhare danced his way into the box, evading two players before picking his spot low in the bottom corner of the net to give City the lead on the hour with his side’s first shot on target of the game.
The Wolves’ forward almost doubled the lead as Coventry looked the far better of the two sides, sending in a deep free-kick that flew just wide of the far post as the Sky Blues looked to secure their advantage.
Robins’s men looked a real threat on the attack with Jordy Hiwula coming to life on the left and Thomas forcing the keeper to save with five minutes remaining.
Amadou Bakayoko then had a far post header disallowed from an Enobakhare cross following a short corner, the linesman having flagged after the ball had gone out of play before it was crossed.
Thomas then wasted a stoppage time chance when he had all the goal to aim at after being teed up by Hiwula but was denied by the out-stretched foot of the keeper.
The result moved City up to eighth place, just five points off sixth placed Doncaster.
