Jordan Shipley earns Sky Blues a point

Coventry City managed a respectable and hard fought point against run away league leaders Luton Town who extended their outstanding unbeaten run to 21 games in the division.

An early set-piece goal from the Hatters’ centre-back Matty Pearson put the home side in control but City played their way into the game and deservedly got themselves back in the game with a Jordan Shipley equaliser just after the half hour mark after they'd been denied a cast iron penalty.

And although forced to defend in numbers for most of a testing second half at Kenilworth Road, the Sky Blues hung on to earn a deserved share of the spoils and extend their own unbeaten run to four games, able to take great confidence from going toe-to-toe with the promotion favourites.

Town fired several warning shots across the bow with Andrew Shinnie going close with two efforts as the rampant home side looked for the early goal.

And they didn’t have to wait long for it to come when centre-half Pearson powered home with his head at the back post from a 17th minute corner, the ball somehow evading the grasp of fit-again Lee Burge.

City felt they should have had a penalty just after the 20 minute mark when Luton keeper James Shea slid in on Amadou Bakayoko and took him out in the process, but the referee waved play on much to the anger of skipper Liam Kelly and his team-mates.

The fallout from that challenge was that the big striker was forced off injured just short of the half hour mark, replaced by Jordan Shipley as Robins had to re-shuffle his attack and send Jordy Hiwula up front to lead the line.

But the pair combined brilliantly on 34 minutes when Hiwula cut in from the left and pulled the ball back for Shipley to place past Shea from the edge of the six-yard box and get Coventry back in the game.

City grew into the game and there was little to choose between the two sides to the break, after which Town attempted to re-assert their grip on the game with a string of corners and free-kicks to test City’s defensive resolve to the full.

And the visitors did well when Shipley and Hyam combined to block Shinnie while Burge came out to claim another in-swinging flag-kick as City contained the home side for long periods.

Robins’s men were, not surprisingly, limited to counter attacking football in the second half when they were hanging on at times, defending in numbers but valiantly to frustrate the Hatters.

Chances were few and far between for Coventry as Robins threw on the experience of David Meyler in a bid to see out their point, which they had to do in four minutes of frantic stoppage time when Burge pulled off a brilliant stop from point blank range.

Attendance: 9,810 (819 City)
