Jordy Hiwula clinches victory as David Stockdale keeps a clean sheet

A single goal from Jordy Hiwula gave Coventry City their first ever victory at Rochdale.

The Sky Blues had not won in eight previous attempts at bogey ground Spotland but halted that miserable record with their first League One win in six games.

Hiwula made the breakthrough midway through the second half when he was played through on goal and knocked it coolly past the keeper and over the line.

Emergency loan keeper David Stockdale earned his corn as he pulled off a terrific save to keep Coventry in the game before Luke Thomas was denied by a decent save six minutes from time before seeing out five long minutes of added time to secure a deserved and much welcome three points.

Robins made five changes to his side as deadline day loan man David Meyler sat out with tight hamstrings resulting in fit-again Liam Kelly to return to the heart of the midfield alongside Tom Bayliss, who was also back in the starting line-up.

City once again dominated possession but had very little to show for it in the first half devoid of goalmouth action – neither team managing a single attempt in the first half an hour.

The visitors, however, had managed five attempts by the break but just one hitting the target – a tame effort from Hiwula that went straight into the keeper’s arms.

Dale, meanwhile, had three attempts and one on target – a powerful long range effort that went straight into emergency loan keeper Stockdale’s grasp, although the home side should have scored when unmarked defender Ryan Delaney hit a free header wide from a free-kick.

The second half was far more open with action at both ends, substitute Brad Inman being denied by a block and Calvin Andrew steering over the bar on the counter attack, while Kelly and substitute Jordan Shipley, who went on for the injured Tom Bayliss, both fired narrowly wide of the far post.

But City finally got the breakthrough they’d been looking for when Amadou Bakayoko flicked on the ball to send Hiwula through on goal, the striker knocking it past the advancing Andy Lonergan and over the line.

Stockdale then made a superb first save of the day when he dropped low to his left to push away an Ian Henderson effort after the striker had danced his way into the box, looking favourite to equalise in the 76th minute.

Thomas almost added a second when he pulled wide in the box and fired low but Lonergan made a good save and a defender cleared as Bakayoko raced in.

Dale kept plugging away and caused a nervous end to five minutes of added time when they won a corner. But the excellent Stockdale came out confidently to catch the ball above his head before the referee blew for full-time.

Attendance: 3,661 (898 City)
