Bright Enobakhare scores, but there's late frustration for Sky Blues

Coventry City threw away a narrow goal lead after conceding a late penalty in front of a bumper 26,741 crowd at the Ricoh Arena.

The Sky Blues were denied victory two minutes from the end of normal time when Tom Eaves struck home from the spot after Lee Burge had brought down Brandon Hanlan in the box.

It was a hugely disappointing end to a frustrating afternoon that saw Bright Enobakhare finally break the deadlock and give the home side the lead in the 68th minute.

New signing David Meyler made his City debut, taking the armband and Michael Doyle’s No.8 shirt o a day when Liam Kelly was out with a groin strain.

And the Republic of Ireland international brought a calming influence to the pitch as City dominated much of the first half against the Gills in an all too familiar scenario that saw the home side struggle to find the back of the net.

Despite plenty of patient build-up play, it was the opposition who went closest to breaking the deadlock on 26 minutes when Elliot List was denied by a superb save from Lee Burge who got down low to his right to get a strong hand to the ball.

Gills’ stopper Tomas Holy was finally tested six minutes from the break when Dujon Sterling was denied at the near post after an intricate build-up involving several passes into the box.

City started the second half with a bit more purpose and intensity but still couldn’t find a way through as Sterling and Luke Thomas had efforts blocked before Amadou Bakayoko was thrown on for the tiring Meyler, who hadn’t played a first team game since September.

The former Walsall striker went close within minutes of being on the pitch when a deflected shot was tipped over the bar by the keeper.

And Bakayoko was involved again when City finally broke the deadlock with when the brilliant Enobakhare started and finished a sensational move.

The Wolves’ loan man won the ball in his own half and then knocked it past Barry Fuller and left him for dead, driving up the pitch to send City on the counter attack.

He slipped it wide to Bakayoko who hit a shot that was blocked by the keeper and the ball fell loose to Enobakhare who slotted home with a clinical finish that Coventry have been so desperately short of in recent weeks.

City had a great chance to wrap things up seven minutes from time when Thomas wriggled past his man and slipped in Bakayoko on the right, but the striker dragged his shot wide at the far post.

Gillingham piled on the pressure as Coventry were forced to defend in numbers – Burge making a crucial save with his foot – and hit the visitors on the counter attack as they looked to put the game beyond reach.

But disaster struck when Jordan Willis headed the ball back to Burge who brought down Brandon Hanlan running through two minutes from time to hand Gillingham a penalty to level the game.

Up stepped Tom Eaves to punish the keeper, sending him the wrong way to secure a point for the visitors and extend Coventry’s miserable run that has seen them manage only three wins in the last 15 league games.
