Coventry City kicked off the New Year in style with victory at Wycombe Wanderers to make it three League One wins on the spin.

A first half penalty from Conor Chaplin gave the Sky Blues the lead at Adams Park before Jonson Clarke-Harris added a second after the break to see Mark Robins’s men complete their third league double in a row with the full three points against the Chairboys.

The only dampener on the day was an injury to midfielder Liam Kelly who had to go off 12 minutes from time with an arm injury but Coventry were well worth their win which was enjoyed by the travelling fans who turned out in their numbers and sang throughout a thoroughly entertaining afternoon.

Luke Thomas made a return to the side after missing Saturday’s match with injury, the lively loan winger coming in for Zain Westbrooke in the only change to Robins’s starting line-up.

And the teenager was again a constant threat to the opposition who doubled up on him in a failed bid to keep him shackled in a lively first half.

Although Wanderers started the brighter of the two teams, Coventry soaked up the early pressure and got their game going at the other end where marauding full-back Dujon Sterling posed problems on the overlap.

And it was the Chelsea loan defender who won a 34th minute penalty when he cut into the box and was tripped from behind by Nathan Tyson.

Chaplin stepped up to take the spot-kick which he sent hard and low to the far bottom left-hand corner of the goal, sending former Sky Blues loan keeper Ryan Allsop the wrong way to give the visitors a deserved lead.

Wanderers attempted a second half fight-back but that made them vulnerable to the counter attack, from which City prospered just after the hour when substitute Clarke-Harris was played clean through on goal by Tom Bayliss and hit a fine finish across the keeper and inside the far post to double the lead.

City were dealt a blow in the 78th minute when Kelly went down injured during a challenge and looked to have landed awkwardly on his left arm.

The skipper was in considerable pain and had to leave the field, replaced by rookie left-back Sam McCallum who was deployed wide left for the remainder of the game, Michael Doyle already having gone on for Chaplin as Robins looked to see out the two-goal lead.
