Jonson Clarke-Harris penalty is too little too late

Coventry City continued their downward spiral with a 2-1 defeat at home to promotion chasing Luton Town.

The Sky Blues suffered their third successive League One loss as second from top Hatters looked every bit the team in top form, taking the first half lead from a corner that was bundled over the line by centre-half Matty Pearson.

Coventry-born James Collins then struck home from close range early in the second half to secure the full three points for the visitors on a disappointing and poor afternoon from Mark Robins’s men who were second best in almost every department.

Jonson Clarke-Harris powered home a late penalty deep in stoppage time but it was little consolation with City now eight games without a win in all competitions as the side head to the midway stage of the season, dropping down to 13th place.

Coventry were slow to get going in a cagey first half in which Town enjoyed the greater possession and looked the more likely to score.

But when the breakthrough did come it came from a set-piece rather than open play after Jack Grimmer had conceded a rather soft free-kick on the edge of the box, the result of which saw the full-back head clear for a corner from which Town scored.

The ball was whipped in to the back post where the Hatters’ centre-backs combined, Sonny Bradley heading down to Matty Pearson to poke over the line from three yards out to give the visitors the lead on 38 minutes.

City felt aggrieved earlier in the half when Jordy Hiwula got on the end of a Luke Thomas cross to the far post and claimed it had crossed the line as keeper James Shea scrambled clear.

But the home side struggled to impose themselves all afternoon and despite starting the second half with more purpose, Luton scored again on 56 minutes to pretty much kill any hopes of the Sky Blues getting anything from the game.

And it was another Cov Kid who did the damage for a second week running as James Collins nipped in to get on the end of a smart Elliot Lee centre to the six yard box.

Robins’s men were dealt another blow when Jordan Willis limped off injured before the manager tried to liven things up by throwing on Conor Chaplin for the disappointing Hwula, while Reise Allassani – back from his loan spell at Ebbsfleet – was thrown on 13 minutes from time.

But, in truth, the Hatters were well in control of the game and continued to push for a third as City were limited to the occasional counter attacks from their liveliest outlet, Luke Thomas.

Dom Hyam had a late header from an Allassani centre saved three minutes from time before the efforts of Thomas finally paid off deep in added time when he was grounded by the keeper, leaving Clarke-Harris to grab a consolation goal from the spot.
