Sky Blues rescue dramatic point

Coventry City rescued a point in a dramatic finale but their overtime heroics were overshadowed when substitute Jodi Jones limped off with what looked like a serious knee injury.

Jones, recently returned from a year on the sidelines, was pitched on in the 73rd minute as Sky Blues looked to build on their growing momentum but his first dash down the left ended in agony as he twisted awkwardly.

He received on-field treatment to his left knee and although he gamely limped back into the fray it soon became clear that he was notify to carry on.

Peterborough wasted little time in unveiling the counter-attacking technique that has contributed to their outstanding away record this season and Jack Grimmer had to pull off a perfectly-timed early tackle to halt Marcus Maddison in full stride.

The Sky Blues had a let-off when Ivan Tony’s pot shot from distance took a big deflection off teammate Matt Godden to loop just over the bar with Lee Burge helpless and Mark Robins’s men struggled to create clear shooting chances.

Posh keeper Aaron Chapman was almost embarrassed when Jonson Clarke-Harris flicked on Michael Doyle’s scuffed corner with Jordy Hiwula hovering and Hiwula then clipped a first-time shot narrowly wide of the far post after a splendid combination between Tom Mayliss and Conor Chapman had prised open a gap.

But Peterborough almost gave themselves the interval edge when Burge had to pull off a sharp near-post save from Matt Godden before muscling his way through a packed six-yard box to deal with the subsequent corner.

City in turn looked set to poach the least three minutes into the second half when they showed their own ability to hit on the break but, having sliced through from deep in his own half, Luke Thomas was again unable to cash in, trundling a low shot wide with Chapman flat-footed.

The keeper was again relieved to field an under powered chip from Bayliss when Doyle’s low corner caught the Posh defence off balance while Clarke-Harris and Hiwula got in each other’s way when another sinuous Thomas run underlined City’s control.

After Jones’s all-too brief intervention City seemed to have thrown the game away in the 90th minute when Doyle lost the ball midway in his own half and Toney ran through to slip the ball past Burge.

But the Sky Blues salvaged their point in the first of five overtime minutes as Amadou Bakayoko spooned a clever cross into the six-yard box and Chaplin turned home from point-blank range.

Attendance: There are 11,719 at the Ricoh, including 1,315 away fans
