The first fall in seven as Sky Blues come unstuck

Coventry City suffered their first defeat in seven League One games, losing 1-0 at relegated Burton Albion.

The Brewers were under strength on the day, without their eight-goal leading scorer Liam Boyce, and took the full three points courtesy of an own goal by Tom Bayliss as Nigel Clough’s improving side recorded their fourth win in six League One games.

Albion dominated much of the game, forcing Mark Robins’s men to defend for long periods and play on the counter attack, and finally got the breakthrough their persistence had threatened just after the hour when a David Templeton free-kick took a heavy deflection off a Coventry player, believed to be Jordan Willis, to beat Lee Burge.

The City keeper had played his part in keeping the visitors in the game, making a crucial low save to deny Jake Hesketh giving Burton the lead on the half hour mark of a lively first half largely bossed by the home side.

Burge made another important stop with his foot, this time to prevent Jamie Allen scoring as Albion kept up the pressure to the break with plenty of attacking play in and around the Coventry box, their lively forward three moving the ball around sharply and quickly.

Luke Thomas was Coventry’s biggest attacking threat in the opening 45 minutes, testing the keeper Bradley Collins with an angled shot while Tom Bayliss drove forward on the odd occasion to spark the Sky Blues into life.

Conor Chaplin was also denied by the keeper in the opening half when City only managed two shots on target to Albion’s three despite their greater possession.

The Brewers continued to dominate early in the second half when City were hemmed in and forced to defend in increasing numbers.

And the home side finally found a way through on 62 minutes when City failed to defend a set-piece that was whipped in from the left and was deflected in by Bayliss for an own goal.

Robins responded by throwing on Amadou Bakayoko and Jodi Jones who offered fresh legs and a bit of impetus but the Sky Blues couldn’t find the quality required to get a goal despite a late rally when their final ball let them down time and time again.
