Forgotten man Amadou Bakayoko stepped off the bench to score a brilliant brace to hand Coventry City a smash and grab victory at Charlton Athletic.

The Sky Blues came from behind at The Valley to record a fantastic three points on the road.

Although City had Lee Burge to thank for some important early saves, Mark Robins’s men gifted the Addicks the lead from the penalty spot when Junior Brown tripped Lyle Taylor in first half stoppage time, leaving Charlton’s leading scorer to finish from 12 yards.

But the game swung in City’s favour early in the second half when a double substitution of Bakayoko and Jordy Hiwula saw the visitors mount a sustained fight-back.

And that pressure was rewarded when Bakayoko got on the end of a Luke Thomas centre ten minutes from time to set up a frantic end to the game.

And the summer signing from Walsall bagged a second in stoppage time when he threw himself to get on the end of a Conor Chaplin cross, heading in from close range to snatch the winner.

Robins made three changes to his side with one noticeable absentee in Jodi Jones who sat out the game due to illness.

Chaplin was restored to the starting line-up on a day when Liam Kelly came in for Jordan Shipley, who was dropped to the bench, and Junior Brown returned at left-back after missing a match with concussion.

Goalkeeper Lee Burge made two important saves in the first 25 minutes, while defender Tom Davies got a crucial block to deny Athletic taking a fifth minute lead as the home side went closest to breaking the deadlock, with leading scorer Lyle Taylor a constant threat.

Chaplin, meanwhile, had a couple of chances at the other end but fired over the bar on both occasions before City gifted the Addicks the opening goal from then penalty spot on the stroke of half-time.

It was Taylor who hit the perfect finish from 12 yards after he’d been tripped by Junior Brown as he went past the defender, cutting into the box.

Robins made a double substitution early in the second half, sending on strikers Jordy Hiwula and Amadou Bakayoko for Liam Kelly and Jonson Clarke-Harris and it had an immediate impact in helping to get City on the offensive after the home side threatened to increase their lead with a sustained spell of pressure.

Urged on by almost 2,000 travelling fans, the Sky Blues continued their fight-back, enjoying their best spell of the game with plenty of possession as they looked to get back on level terms.

And they were rewarded when Bakayoko turned home a Thomas centre in the 80th minute before sealing the victory with a brilliant header at the death.
