Conor Chaplin scored his first goal for Coventry City to help Mark Robins’s men record their first League One win away from home.

The welcome victory was also only the second win of the season for the Sky Blues who have been slow to get their campaign up and running.

Jordan Shipley gave City the lead just after the hour at the Kassam Stadium, set up by Chaplin who started his first game for the club.

And then Shipley won a penalty ten minutes from time, leaving Chaplin to send the keeper the wrong way with a clinical finish to open his account.

City then conceded from a corner five minutes from time to set up a nervous end to the game, but they managed to hang on to lift themselves out of the relegation zone and up to 12th place in the division.

It was a scrappy first half at the Kassam Stadium full of fouls and free-kicks.

The home side went closest to breaking the deadlock in a tight opening 45, James Henry clipping the apex of the goal early on.

U’s dangerman Marcus Browne was taken out twice in the space of two minutes, resulting in early bookings for Jordan Shipley and Junior Brown, as United enjoyed more possession than the visitors.

City’s best chance of the half fell to the impressive Chaplin who was played through by Tom Bayliss, controlling brilliantly to get his shot off but seeing his effort blocked at the last second by the recovering centre-half Curtis Nelson.

Robins was forced to make his first change when Jack Grimmer was replaced by Dujon Sterling at the break after picking up a knock.

And the U’s should really have taken the lead early in the second period when City failed to deal with a corner and John Mousinho put the ball wide at the far post.

Coventry, however, finally broke the deadlock in the 64th minute when Chaplin linked up well with Shipley and the midfielder hit an angled shot that took a deflection to take it past goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell.

The home side responded well, putting City under some sustained pressure and gaining a bit of momentum to test the visitors’ resolve at the back.

But City appeared to kill the game off when Shipley was fouled by the keeper in the box, leaving Chaplin to extend the lead with a clinical finish from the spot.

But United kept plugging away and pulled one back five minutes from time, substitute Jon Obika heading home from a corner to set up a tense end to the game.
