Horror start for Mark Robins and his Sky Blues side

Coventry City’s less than inspiring pre-season results continued on the opening day of the new League One campaign when they lost at home to Scunthorpe United.

The Sky Blues lost four of their six warm-up matches after their preparations had been dogged by injury and absent personnel, and they only had themselves to blame for giving up a goal lead after a promising opening hour at the Ricoh Arena.

A brilliant free-kick from Tony Andreu put Mark Robins’s men in front early in the second half and they had the chance to double their lead when Tom Bayliss hit the woodwork minutes later.

But United forward Stephen Humphrys broke into the box and hit an angled shot that found the back of the net to pull The Iron level and take the momentum out of City’s play.

And midfielder Andy Dales conjured up a goal out of nowhere nine minutes from time as Coventry ran out of steam and looked disjointed at the back.

Robins handed full competitive debuts to four summer signings – full-backs Dujon Sterling and Brandon Mason, midfielder Abu Ogogo and striker Jordy Hiwula – as City got off to a decent start to the game.

Hiwula had the first decent chance of the half when he burst free on the right and blasted narrowly wide, while Max Biamou forced the keeper to dive to his right and make a save after executing an impressive overhead kick.

Andreu added real flair and creativity in the No.10 position and also tested keeper Rory Watson at his near post with a low shot from 25 yards out.

At the other end, The Iron twice hit the woodwork as City looked vulnerable from set pieces, with the visitors growing in confidence as the first half went on.

The Iron started the second half strongly but City soon took the sting out of the visitors when Jordy Hiwula was brought down outside the box and Andreu stepped up to convert the setpiece with a brilliant goal on his return from long term injury.

The lead, however, only last 13 minutes before United got themselves back on level terms with a Stephen Humphrys equaliser, the forward driving into the box on the left and hitting an angle shot past O’Brien.

And Dales wrapped things up in the 81st minute when he hit a shot from just inside the box, beating O’Brien who dived to his right but couldn’t get a hand to it.

City battled on, looking for an equaliser in added time when Andreu was denied by a good save from a free-kick before another attack saw the keeper pull off a brilliant reaction save to deny Hiwula from point blank range.
