Sensational Sky Blues promoted after Willis, Shipley and Grimmer goals

Image

Jordan Willis, Coventry City’s captain when they were relegated 12 months ago, fired the Sky Blues back up to League One with a stunning opening goal at Wembley Stadium.

Mark Robins’s men then rattled in two more with all three goals coming in the space of 20 devastating minutes to beat Exeter City in the League Two play-off final and return to the third tier at the first time of asking, securing City’s first promotion in 51 years.

Jordan Shipley scored the second, teed up by Marc McNulty, before the striker set up a stunning Jack Grimmer finish to seal City’s victory in a sensational second half at the national stadium.

The Grecians, out-played after the break, managed a late consolation goal from the boot of Kyle Edwards but City saw out five minutes of added time to lift the League Two play-off trophy in front of almost 38,000 ecstatic travelling fans.

The Sky Blue Army were phenomenal from the build-up to the last whistle, providing deafening noise as the proud players took to the field in draining temperatures.

Sky Blues secure promotion to League One after Wembley triumph

City started at pace, taking the game to Exeter with the outstanding McNulty turning his man and leaving him trailing behind down the right flank from where he cut in and had his attempted cross cut out for a corner after just 30 seconds of play.

It was a tight and tense affair with Coventry looking the more ambitious in the early exchanges, McNulty trying his luck with a lob from outside the box that dipped over the bar, while Michael Doyle and Liam Kelly threw themselves into some crunching tackles in a clogged up midfield battleground that included five opposition men.

City quickly established a grip on the game, boxing the Grecians into their own half and forcing them to defend in numbers as they played the ball around, sideways and backwards to come forwards again with a string of passes cheered by their fans until an opening for McNulty who burst into space and hit a hard and low shot straight at keeper Christy Pym.

Robins’s men were playing all the football while Exeter looked to play the ball wide and get it onto lone centre-forward Jayden Stockley’s head – not your typical route one but certainly a direct approach. The big target man put himself about and used his arms, frequently flailing, to rough up the City rearguard with Chris Stokes taking a cut to his head after one aerial challenge.

The pace of the game understandably slowed as the first half went on with both sides getting the measure of each other and limited to the occasional effort from outside the area, City edging the shot count by four to two at the 40 minute mark.

Both sides were clearly desperate not to make a mistake to let the other in and it made for a frustrating game at times as City lacked the attacking verve they displayed in abundance against Notts County.

Tom Bayliss had a very quiet first half, finding himself with Exeter players doubling up on him to snuff out his attacking drive which City fans saw on just two occasions before the break.

He and Shipley – more lively than his fellow Academy graduate – held the key to unlocking a tight and well-organised defence while Doyle constantly looked to spring McNulty through with searching balls down the middle.

The half-time team talk appeared to do the trick as Bayliss reappeared rejuvenated, twisting his full-back inside and out before getting a ball into the box, looking every bit the precocious talent that he is.

And then City finally got the breakthrough their early second half endeavour deserved from the unlikeliest of sources. Jordan Willis was up supporting an attack when the centre-half received a square ball from Doyle. His his first touch was exquisite, taking him away from his man as he cut inside and unleashed a stunning curling effort round the keeper from 20 yards out.

The 48th minute goal was then doubled five minutes later when McNulty led the charge, running at speed at the Exeter defence before slipping the ball to Shipley to his left.

There was plenty of fortune about the goal, the 20-year-old running onto the superbly weighted ball and hitting it first time and watching as it took a huge deflection from the sliding in Ryan Harley to loop round the keeper.

But City had all the momentum, having come out with purpose and looked a real force and, as they saying goes, fortune favours the brave!

“We are going up, we are going up” sang the City faithful as the national stadium erupted into life as City took their 2-0 lead with 53 minutes showing on the clock.

Robins’s men spent time defending their box as the Grecians attempted a fight-back but it was short lived as City rustled up a third from the boot of Jack Grimmer, making it three in the space of 20 stunning minutes.

McNulty was again the architect, holding the ball up and pushing it to Grimmer who curled in a sensational shot into the far top corner to complete City’s return to the third tier.

Lee Burge was called upon to make his first save of the afternoon shortly afterwards and seemed to be seeing the game out well until two minutes from time when substitute Kyle Edwards cut in past Jordan Ponticelli and hit a good finish into the far bottom corner.

But it was a task too for the for Devon side and City managed the remainder of the match before the final whistle sparked the celebrations as reality kicked in that the Sky Blues had done it.
