Sky Blues romp to the League Two play-off final

Coventry City booked their place in the League Two play-off final at Wembley after overcoming Notts County in another full-blooded encounter with the Magpies.

Max Biamou lit the sky blue touchpaper with a fifth minute overhead kick before the superb Marc McNulty doubled the lead on 37 minutes in a pulsating game at Meadow Lane where City were brilliant, to a man, on the night.

Jorge Grant pulled one back for the home side just before the break but Biamou was the hero of the night when he popped up with a second, and Coventry’s third, before Tom Bayliss added a sensational fourth to seal a brilliant and deserved victory five minutes from time.

Mark Robins’s men now stand just one game away from being promoted back to the third tier of English football if they can overcome Exeter City at the national stadium on May 28.

City came flying out of the blocks at Meadow Lane where Biamou capitalised on their first corner, sent in by Liam Kelly to the head of the returning Jordan Willis – the centre-back knocking it down on the angle for the Frenchman to finish from close range with his back to goal.

The Jimmy Sirrel Stand housing 4,475 of the Sky Blue Army erupted and got right behind their side in a white hot atmosphere, driving them on every step of the way.

Coventry played some fantastic football in the opening half and capitalised on their dominance when McNulty – absolutely unplayable throughout – started and finished a brilliant move. The striker latched onto a long ball from Chris Stokes and spread it wide to Tom Bayliss who drove forward and slipped it to Liam Kelly to the right of goal near the byline.

The midfielder then sent in a square pass which City’s leading scorer ran onto and coolly picked his spot with a clinical side foot goal – his 28th of the season!

Unfortunately the visitors couldn’t hold their two goal cushion to the break and conceded when a throw-in was flicked on by Jonathan Forte and went through Jack Grimmer’s leg to Jorge Grant to finish unchallenged.

The home side launched a second half fight-back as City weathered the storm with centre-backs Willis and Dom Hyam outstanding and goalkeeper Lee Burge pulled off a brilliant save to deny Jon Stead an equaliser.

That, along with a disallowed Jonathan Forte header for off-side, was the turning point of the game and City re-established their grip just when they were coming increasingly under the pressure.

McNulty was involved again, linking up with Biamou who restored City’s two goal cushion with a precise finish from 16 yards, the Frenchman taking advantage of a slip by Elliott Hewitt to score in the 72nd minute.

Tom Bayliss then wrapped things up five minutes from time with a sensational bottom corner finish before fans asked for ‘five’ and Jack Grimmer and very nearly obliged in what was an outstanding performance from Mark Robins’s men who fully deserved it on the night.
