Sky Blues secure first ever play-offs spot

Coventry City secured their first ever place in the play-offs with a last day point against Morecambe on a sun-drenched Legends Day at the Ricoh Arena.

Sky Blues fans spilled onto the pitch after an entertaining yet ultimately goalless encounter that put Mark Robins’s men two steps from a trip to Wembley and chance to gain promotion back to League One at the first attempt.

City’s final league position of sixth means they face a two-legged semi-final clash with Notts County?

Coventry just needed a single point to prevent Mansfield Town – who drew 1-1 at home to Crawley – from catching them and the Shrimps also celebrated on the day as they required a draw to prevent them from being relegated from the Football League.

The Sky Blues dominated the game but struggled to break down a determined Shrimps side and when they did fine a way through – on three notable occasions – they were denied by an inside goalkeeper.

City were twice denied by the superb veteran Barry Roche who tipped over a fierce Michael Doyle shot and then somehow threw himself to his right to get a firm hand to a Jonson Clarke-Harris volley that looked destined for the back of the net.

Lee Burge, in contrast, didn’t have a single save to make in the entire 90 minutes when the closest Morecambe got to goal was when outstanding City defender Tom Davies stuck out an out-stretched foot to divert a threatening cross away from the head of Aaron Wildig.

Morecambe took great credit for the way they defended. They were organised and solid, and kept City at arm’s length in a frustrating second half when City’s leading scorer Marc McNulty hardly got a look in in front of goal as the Sky Blues simply couldn’t break the visitors down.

The inspired Roche – making his 400th appearance fro the Shrimps – came to the rescue for a third time with just over 15 minutes left on the clock when Tom Bayliss drove forward and hit a low effort down the middle, the 36-year-old stopper dropping to the deck to smother the ball.

But as the final whistle blew both sets of fans celebrated – City achieving a top six finish for the first time in 48 long years, and Morecambe retaining their 11-year status in the Football League.

Coventry fans spilled onto the pitch to celebrate and then in extraordinary scores ensured as the home fans went to the away end to start a mutual appreciation society.

Today’s attendance is 15,874, including 748 away fans.
