Jordan Ponticelli seals big win for Sky Blues

A Jordan Ponticelli brace provided the perfect pick-me-up for the Sky Blues who strengthened their grip on the League Two play-off positions with victory at mid-table Crawley Town.

The 19-year-old striker was handed his first start since November and justified his selection as he gave Mark Robins’s men the lead and then, having been pulled back to 1-1, bagged a brilliantly placed winner 13 minutes from time to make it three goals in two games for the lad.

City’s win means they stay one step ahead of nearest rivals Mansfield and Swindon – who won and lost respectively – with four games left to secure their place in the final promotion mix.

Coventry started the game at Broadfield Stadium having dropped out of the play-offs to eighth place courtesy of Mansfield’s victory at Chesterfield but restored their one point advantage within minutes of the kick-off when Ponticelli struck.

The 19-year-old hit a clinical first time shot after Marc McNulty had pulled the ball back to him from the byline, leaving the striker to make it two goals in two games following his late strike at Notts County last week.

However, the early goal sparked the home side into life and they got themselves back on level terms in the 13th minute when marauding right-back Lewis Young drilled in a low angle shot to the far corner.

Jonson Clarke-Harris went close to restoring City’s advantage with a 25-yard effort that was palmed away by in-form keeper Glenn Morris, while midfielder Liam Kelly did brilliantly to win the ball in the middle of the park to set up a chance for himself, only to waste the opportunity with a shot that failed to test the keeper.

Morris denied McNulty midway through the second half as City began to dominate proceedings and look for a winner, and the keeper came to the rescue again minutes later, making himself big to block an angled effort from Jack Grimmer.

But the Town stopper was finally beaten in the 78th minute when substitute Max Biamou laid the lovely ball back to Ponticelli just inside the apex of the 18-yard box on the right, and the teenager picked his spot by lifting the ball over the keeper and into the far corner to send the 1,197 travelling Sky Blues Army wild behind the goal.

Biamou had the chance to add a third deep in stoppage time as City saw out the game, well in control of their opponents, but the Frenchman fired wide, the ball looking to have taken a bobble with the goal gaping.

But City took the valuable three points to see themselves move up to sixth place in the table.
