Sky Blues' play-off push suffers another blow at Meadow Lane

Coventry City’s play-off push suffered another blow with their second defeat in a week in a bad tempered affair at promotion rivals Notts County.

Mark Robins’s men travelled to Meadow Lane determined to make up for their Easter Monday thrashing by Yeovil but couldn’t send the 4,200-strong Sky Blue Army home with a win.

Despite a determined battle in a highly competitive match against the Magpies, City allowed Jonathan Forte to head home unmarked from a 60th minute corner and simply didn’t create enough openings at the other end despite plenty of effort.

Substitute Jordan Ponticelli looked to have secured a dramatic late point for the visitors with a clever back-heel finish six minutes from time in a highly charged climax to the game.

But Forte restored the lead with a scrappy finish two minutes later and the home side hung on to see out the victory.

It really was a feisty and scrappy affair with very few chances in a highly competitive and increasingly aggressive first half with players going through each other and leaving a foot in here and there.

Jordan Shipley took an early elbow to the eye and required treatment while Michael Doyle caught and rattled County striker Shola Ameobi with a flailing arm before the half ended all square at 0-0 with very little to choose between the two sides.

Liam Noble took a whack at Doyle early in the second half and handbags flew in all over the place with three players going in the book. Noble was lucky to stay on the pitch minutes later when he went through Liam Kelly before the home side got their noses in front on the hour.

Centre-forward Forte was allowed to wriggle free into space in the box from a corner and stooped to nod into the bottom corner from inside the six yard box.

Ponticelli then scored a superb equaliser after the ball fell loose after Liam Kelly had had an effort saved, the young striker back heeling it past the keeper.

But two minutes later City were undone at the other end when Forte pounced for a second time to restore the lead.
