Three down in 15 minutes as Sky Blues hit for six

Coventry City’s impressive seven game unbeaten run came crashing to an end at the Ricoh Arena where they were thumped 6-2 by bottom half Yeovil Town.

Mark Robins’s men found themselves 3-0 down inside the first 15 minutes in the shock League Two result of the day and worst defeat of City’s season.

The Sky Blues were in disarray from the the fifth minute when Lee Burge dropped a cross to allow the Glovers to pounce for their first, and mistakes by Michael Doyle and Jack Grimmer resulted in the visitors banging in two more before the home side had even got started.

It was all in stark contrast to their previous home game when they brushed aside Grimsby Town 4-0 and comes as a real blow to confidence as the side looked to strengthen their grip on the play-off positions with six games to go.

Peter Vincenti was taken off just after the half hour after a dreadful start to the game and goalkeeper Burge followed at the break, replaced by Liam O’Brien, presumed injured.

And although Vincenti’s replacement Max Biamou pulled a goal back for City a minute into the second half, the Glovers restored their three goal cushion with a fourth in the 54th minute to spoil any hopes of a sustained second half fight-back.

Disaster struck in the fifth minute when Burge let a high ball into the six yard box slip from his grasp with the ball falling to Shaun Donnellan who drilled it in for striker Alex Fisher to bundle home at the near post.

Skipper Doyle was then robbed in the 11th minute resulting in a two v two attack and Lewis Wing slipping in Francois Zoko to score before Grimmer under hit a back-pass header which allowed Fisher to nip in and make it 3-0.

Marc McNulty pulled the ball back for Biamou to reduce the deficit early in the second half before Zoko raced past Dom Hyam to drill home Yeovil’s fourth.

The leading scorer turned provider again in the 67th minute when he headed the ball down for Biamou to thump a brilliant 30-yarder into the top corner to make it 4-2.

But any hopes of salvaging anything from the game evaporated when substitute Sam Surridge hit a fifth for the Glovers with ten minute to go, and then added a sixth at the death, curling home with the outside of his boot as City dropped to seventh in the table.
