Clarke-Harris and Bayliss seal victory for Sky Blues

Coventry City strengthened their foothold in the play-off places with a deserved victory at relegation battlers Crewe Alexandra.

First half goals from Jonson Clarke-Harris and Tom Bayliss gave the Sky Blues a 2-1 lead into the break, having conceded midway through the opening 45, to help City extend their impressive unbeaten run to five.

Clarke-Harris got the ball rolling with a fifth minute opener after he drove into the box from the left and thumped home an angled shot that took a deflection at the last second.

Stand-in keeper Liam O’Brien – in for the ill Lee Burge – then pulled off a brilliant save to deny former City striker Shaun Miller an equaliser before making another superb stop to deny Paul Green, only for striker Jordan Bowery to head home the rebound unmarked into an empty net.

But Coventry restored their lead before the break when Bayliss dribbled into the box and fired in off the inside of the far post to record his third for the club.

The teenager failed to appear for the second half after picking up a knock and was replaced by Liam Kelly who should really have extended City’s lead on the hour when he curled round the far post with just the keeper to beat.

Robins’s men continued to take the game to the home side in an end to end encounter full of chances for both sides over the 90 minutes.

But the Sky Blues were in control for large spells of the game and worthy of their lead and victory over the Railwaymen that took them up to sixth place in the table, just five points off the automatic places.
