Marc McNulty bags the winner

Coventry City got their play-off push back on track with a huge victory in sub-zero temperatures at third from top Wycombe Wanderers.

A late Marc McNulty penalty secured a much-needed three points in a gutsy display at Adams Park to send the hardcore 702-strong Sky Blue Army home happy after braving the Baltic conditions.

City had the better of the first half in terms of possession and knocking the ball about reasonably well, albeit failing to trouble the goalkeeper at all in the opening 45 minutes while Lee Burge was forced to make one low but fairly comfortable save at the other end to deny the home side.

Clarke-Harris and McNulty put themselves about well up front but nothing really dropped for them before the break as Wycombe’s well organised back line kept them at arm’s length.

At the other end Wanderers’ dangerman Adebayo Akinfenwa was kept largely in check by City playing a defensive high line and Rod McDonald keeping a close eye on the heavyweight striker.

Kyel Reid added a bit of quality in the final third when he went on for the injured Jordan Shipley early in the second half, and supplied a terrific ball to McNulty who fired wide of the far post as chances continued to be few and far between for Robins’s men.

But with nine minutes left on the clock, Tom Bayliss went past one player on the right and cut into the box where he was brought down by centre-half Dan Scarr, with referee Brendan Malone pointing straight to the spot.

Up stepped McNulty to drive the ball hard and low to the keeper’s left and take his season’s tally to 17.

City then held out for the remainder of the game, battling for every ball to see out the victory which will inject renewed confidence to the Mark Robins’s men who maximised one of their games in hand to claw back to within three points of seventh placed Swindon Town in the play-off places.
