The Sky Blues lose ground on their promotion rivals

Coventry City’s slide continued as they slipped to their third successive League Two defeat to further dent their promotion ambitions.

The Sky Blues were second best against Colchester United in a poor first half showing when they conceded a soft penalty at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Teenage midfielder Tom Bayliss bagged the equaliser in a much-improved second 45 when City looked like they would go on to win the game, enjoying all the momentum until the home side hit them with a sucker punch at the death when Mikael Mandron headed home the winner.

City fell behind from a 27th minute penalty after Rod McDonald tugged the arm of bright young forward Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe as he attempted an ambitious overhead kick in the box, leaving the 23-year-old plucked from non-league Hayes to convert his first senior goal for the U’s, having scored an impressive 34 in 34 before making the step up to full-time football.

But the home side arguably deserved their first half lead, having been the brighter and more inventive of the two sides and having forced returnign goalkeeper Lee Burge into two good saves.

The Sky Blues, meanwhile, failed to test Sam Walker at all in the first half when the closest they came to scoring was when full-back Chris Stokes hit the side netting from distance.

However, Robins’s men looked far more determined in the second half when Bayliss got them back on level terms with a thumping 56th minute shot that went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Substitute Jonson Clarke-Harris then forced the keeper into a terrific save with a clever near post flick from a corner as City took control and looked the better side in the second half.

But a late rally from the home side saw them snatch the points two minutes from time and send City’s 438 fans home disappointed.
