McNulty, Shipley and Doyle on target as Sky Blues go fourth

Coventry City earned a valuable and hard fought win as they got back to League Two action against mid-table Cambridge United.

First half goals from Marc McNulty and Jordan Shipley, and a late effort from skipper Michael Doyle ensured the Sky Blues took all three points to take the club’s haul to 50 after 29 games, and jump Mark Robins’s men up three places to fourth.

Coventry were well worth their lead in a commanding first 45 minutes against a poor visiting side who only sparked to life just before the break when they forced Lee Burge to make two saves in quick succession.

Even McNulty’s opening strike – a delightful curling shot round the keeper from the edge of the box – didn’t prompt a reaction from Shaun Derry's men who conceded another on the half hour mark when McNulty turned provider to tee up Shipley for a looping header at the back post.

However, City lost their rhythm and shape a bit as United mounted a determined fight-back after the break with a good spell of pressure as Saturday’s gruelling FA Cup tie appeared to catch up with them.

The home side defended well with numerous blocks and tackles keeping the visitors at arm’s length as City were forced to play on the counter attack for long periods until six minutes from time when George Taft headed home from a corner to make for a nervous end to the game.

But Doyle popped up in four minutes of added time with a thumping shot that almost burst the back of the net after being teed up by Max Biamou to secure the 3-1 victory on a night when the attendance was 6,897, which was fewer than the away following City took to MK Dons on Saturday.
