Mark McNulty fires Sky Blues to victory

Marc McNulty fired Coventry City into the automatic promotion places on a New Year’s Day victory over struggling Chesterfield.

The in-form striker curled a delightful 25-yard shot round the Spireites’ keeper in the 13th minute at the Ricoh Arena to ensure the Sky Blues kicked off 2018 with their third win out of four festive fixtures that lifts them up to third place place on 44 points.

McNulty almost doubled the lead midway through the second half when he was denied by goalkeeper Jake Eastood before the visitors were reduced to ten men 11 minutes from time when centre-half Scott Wiseman was sent off for a second yellow card.

The closest Chesterfield went to a goal was a first half effort from Andy Kellett, who was denied by a decent save from Lee Burge, and again when the wide man curled wide of the target as City defended their slender lead after the break.

Coventry almost secured their victory in the last ten minutes when McNulty saw a decent shot pushed wide before Tom Davies headed over a Jack Grimmer cross.

But City saw out the result in a professional manner on a day when McNulty took his current run to eight goals in nine games, extending his Sky Blues tally to 12 for the season so far to further underline his quality in a game in which Robins was forced to make one change to his side that beat Carlisle United on Saturday, with Max Biamou restored to the starting line-up in place of Stuart Beavon who had to go off injured in the 1-0 win at Brunton Park.

Duckens Nazon was also a casualty of that game and failed to recover from a hip injury for today’s match which saw Jordan Willis recover from the dead leg that saw him also limp off against the Cumbrians.

Fellow centre-half Rod McDonald missed his second successive game with a combination of illness and a sore groin, leaving Tom Davies to deputise once again in the back four.
