Marc McNulty seals the win

Coventry City put their Boxing Day disappointment behind them with a thumping good win on the long road trip to Carlisle United.

A single goal from Marc McNulty gave the hardcore 847 Sky Blue Army plenty to cheer on the seven-hour round trip to Cumbria as Mark Robins’s men bounced back from their 1-0 defeat at Port Vale to see out 2017 with a hard-fought three points to put their automatic promotion hopes back o track.

The team’s leading scorer took his tally to 11 but missed the opportuntiy to double the lead when he had a penalty saved 15 minutes from time to make for a nerve wracking end to the game as City hung on for the win.

Coventry completed their first double of the campaign, having beaten United 2-0 at the Ricoh earlier in the season and the result was City’s fifth League Two victory away from home so far this season and saw the side move up to fifth in the table.

City managed just one shot on goal in the first half when Devon Kelly-Evans tested the keeper as the visitors battled the elements at Brunton Park where they were forced to defend against a fierce wind in the opening 45.

They also suffered an early blow when they lost key defender Jordan Willis to injury after just 17 minutes, having already started the game without Rod McDonald who is understood to be on paternity duty with his pregnant partner.

And the visitors suffered a further set-back in the second half when half-time substitute Duckens Nazon limped off after just ten minutes of replacing Stuart Beavon.

But it was a much improved second half display when McNulty got the all important goal on a day when City could have had at least two more as Tom Bayliss was denied by the keeper and hit the post.
