Marc McNulty and Tom Bayliss seal the points

Marc McNulty scored a superb winner to give Coventry City a much-needed League Two victory in their first ever meeting with Cheltenham Town.

The striker looked to be having one of those days when he slashed and missed the target several times but he finally raced through on goal and hit a sublime touch past the keeper to hand the Sky Blues the win 16 minutes from time.

Teenager Tom Bayliss had got City off to a dream start on his full league debut for the club, scoring after just a minute and ten seconds when his deflected shot beat goalkeeper Scott Flinders and City really should have extended their lead when Max Biamou and McNulty dragged chances wide.

But the Robins gave a good account of themselves at the other end where leading scorer Mohamed Eisa was twice denied by Lee Burge before finding the back of the net to hand the visitors a first half equaliser.

Coventry looked the more likely after the break when McNulty was denied by the keeper early on and then finally showed the composure required when set up by a brilliant ball from substitute Duckens Nazon.

Mark Robins made three changes to his side and switched formation to 4-4-2 against Gary Johnson’s men.

In came 18-year-old midfielder Bayliss to make his full league debut for the club, while Chris Stokes was restored at left-back in place of Ryan Haynes, and Peter Vincenti was preferred to leading scorer Nazon who had to be content with a place on the bench.

The Sky Blues claimed their first three points in five games at the Ricoh Arena after seeing off the Robins to keep pace with the play-off pack.

Manager Mark Robins labelled his side’s performance “horrendous” and “embarrassing” at Morecambe last week but got the required response seven days later with a decent enough display to get the job done against the Gloucestershire club.
