Andy Turner reports on a depressing afternoon for the Sky Blues

Coventry City suffered a miserable seventh defeat in the division in their first ever league meeting with Morecambe.

The Sky Blues, who have been travelling well of late, slipped to a dreadful 2-0 loss at the Globe Arena where the struggling Shrimps had only managed three League Two victories this term ahead of the fixture.

Mark Robins’s men simply couldn’t contain big centre-forward Vadaine Oliver in the first half, allowing the No.9 to sneak in behind from a free-kick to give his side a 36th minute lead in a disappointing 45 minutes in which Lee Burge twice came to the rescue for the visitors who also had one cleared off the line by the returning Rod McDonald.

Leading scorer Duckens Nazon and midfielder Ben Stevenson - in for the injured Liam Kelly - forced home keeper Barry Roche into two saves for City’s best efforts of the opening half in which Coventry failed to assert themselves against a determined home side full of passion and desire – qualities Coventry struggled to match on the day.

Nazon and Jordan Shipley were replaced by Peter Vincenti and Devon Kelly-Evans at the break but the substitutes couldn’t inspire a fight-back against the fourth from bottom side who doubled their lead midway through the second period when one of their own substitutes, Callum Lang, danced his way into the box to beat Burge at his near post.

Marc McNulty hit the foot of the post as City huffed and puffed in a game of very few chances for Robins’s side who had Burge to thank again late on to deny veteran Garry Thompson increasing the embarrassment for the hardy 689-strong Sky Blue Army who had made the 300-mile round trip to Lancashire.
